Chapter 119 Oblivious
quiz him on spelling words too.
When Nevin got home, she would already be waiting at the door, holding Orion
She’d hand Orion over to him.
Orion would start chattering right away about his day. evin would carry him from the entryway to the dining room.
That short walk had become their routine. A father and his son, every evening.
“Mr. Blackwell, Orion, dinner’s ready.”
Rhea’s voice cut into the silence like a splash of cold water.
Orion put down his pencil. His notebook was covered in carefully copied words.
That kind of discipline was all Demi.
Nevin reached for the notebook. “Let me take a look.”
Orion slammed it shut. “Rhea already called us.”
He had just finished his language assignment, but two big math problems were still sitting there unsolved.
He didn’t want Nevin to notice. He’d rather figure them but on his own later.
Nevin paused. “Come on downstairs. Wash up first.”
“Okay.”
“Orion, look what I made. A bear bread just for you.”
At the dinner table, Rhea set a child-sized bowl in front of him. The bread had been shaped into a bear’s
head.
Orion’s face lit up again. “I’m gonna eat the ears first.”
Nevin glanced at Rhea, thankful.
The three of them sat down to eat. Rhea knew how to keep kids happy. It didn’t take long before Orion started to smile again.
At Snow Group…
Demi was still at work. Her dinner had been dropped off by the driver.
When she finally took a break, her thoughts started drifing. Everything tasted wrong. All she could think about was the way Orion ran away that afternoon.
Was she being too harsh?
He called her his mother. No matter what happened, she shouldn’t have ignored him.

While weighing it in her head, Demi paused, but she still ended up texting Helga to check on Orion.
Helga replied, “Mrs. Blackwell, Mr. Orion behaved really well today. He stayed home and did his homework. He didn’t come down until you got back.”
Helga didn’t know Orion had been in his room crying earlier. She figured everything was fine, just like always. She thought he was just being focused on schoolwork.
Demi stared at the message for a long moment. Then she let out a small breath and set the phone back down.
At the house, Helga stood by while Rhea played with Orion. He let out a few light giggles that sounded carefree and cheerful.
Helga thought it over, then took out her phone and snapped a few candid shots. She sent them to Demi right after.
When Demi saw the pictures, she froze again.
She’d been so worried that Orion wouldn’t eat or that he was still upset.
But that wasn’t the kid she saw in the photos.
He looked happy. His smile stretched from ear to ear.
What gutted her more was that Nevin showed up in one of the photos too. He was sitting at the same table, having dinner with them, looking like a perfect family of three.
