Chapter 18 Your Son is Gone

Nevin shot up from his chair. “Did you check the cameras? Did he leave the house?”

“I already did,” Rhea said. “A few minutes after I went downstairs, Orion walked out alone and disappeared from the camera range.”

“Send me the footage.” Nevin hung up. A moment later, surveillance footage came through on his phone.

He watched it closely. In the footage, Orion waited until Rhea wasn’t looking, then slipped out the front door.

Asking her to cut fruit had just been an excuse to get her out of the way.

Nevin replayed the video several times. Orion didn’t look like he was wandering; he looked like he was headed somewhere to find someone.

He didn’t call the police right away. Instead, he dialed Demi.

One Studio.

Demi was focused on her sketch when her phone rang. She answered without checking the caller.

“Hello?”

“Orion’s gone.”

Nevin’s eyes darkened. So she doesn’t even remember his phone number now?

Demi froze. She glanced at the number on the screen.

She hadn’t looked before answering.

Her voice stayed calm. “What do you mean he’s gone? What are you trying to say?”

Nevin explained, “He snuck out of the house by himself. We can’t find him.”

Nevin’s tone was tight, as if he was forcing his voice to stay steady. “Demi, you need to come back and find him. He’s only six-”

“If he’s missing, then call the police,” she cut in sharply. “How would I know where he is?”

Before Nevin could say anything, Demi shot back, “What? You think it’s my fault Orion went missing? You’re the father. Shouldn’t you be the one watching him? Something happens, and all you could do is call

me?”

Nevin’s breath grew heavier, his anger rising. “Our son’s missing! And you’re not even worried? Demi, do you even deserve to be his mother?!”

He couldn’t believe it.

Her first reaction after hearing Orion was gone was to ask him to call the police?

“Oh, sure, I don’t deserve it,” Demi said sharply.

She didn’t let him have it. “If he’s really missing, would you waste time arguing with me? You’re just using this as an excuse to drag me back, aren’t you?”

Her voice turned cold. “So. Nevin, just sign the divorce papers. Once we’re divorced, there’ll be no reason for Orion to call me ‘Mom‘ anymore. So, please, go ahead–sign it!”

She steadied herself and pushed him.

“Demi, do you even hear yourself right now?”

Nevin’s voice rose with frustration, his anger spilling over as he once again realized just how petty Demi could be.

“I know exactly what I’m saying,” she snapped back, sarcasm dripping from every word.

“I’m not good enough to be Orion’s mom? Fine. I think Rhea fits that role perfectly. So hurry up and sign those papers, Nevin. Marry Rhea already. I’m making space for her. So do it, Nevin! Sign the papers, marry her, and live happily ever after with your perfect little family!”

She finished her words in one breath, then hung up without hesitation.

“Whew!”
