Chapter 19 The Torn Pages

Phoebe walked in with two cups of coffee. “Here, take a break and have some coffee.”

“Phoebe, something happened with Orion. I need to go.” Demi grabbed her car keys, barely explaining before heading for the door.

Just then, the office phone rang.

Demi answered. It was the front desk receptionist. “Ms. Snow, there’s a little boy here asking for you.”

She exhaled a deep breath. Demi whole body suddenly weak. She hurriedly said, “Send him up right

away.”

At that moment, she realized something. No matter how much she tried to let go emotionally, her worry for Orion was something she could never turn off.

It was pure instinct.

A few minutes later, the receptionist brought Orion into her office.

“You could’ve just called me …” Demi began but then remembered. She was the one who refused to answer his calls.

She thought maybe Orion missed her. Her eyes turned watery. Demi reached out to hug him.

But Orion pushed her hand away.

His eyes–so much like Nevin’s–were full of blame, not affection.

“I just came to see if you’re cheating on Dad. Are you seeing another man behind our backs?”

Orion’s words cut deep, breaking apart the fragile bit of motherly love that had just started to come back to life inside Demi.

Haha! She let out a quiet laugh, shaking her head at herself.

What was she even hoping for? That her son had missed her? How foolish.

Orion glanced around her office. Aside from a woman he didn’t know–Phoebe–there wasn’t another person in sight. No strange man, no signs of anything suspicious. The space looked small and plain, more like a personal studio than a big company office.

He frowned to himself. So, Mom isn’t cheating with another man. She just cares more about work than about me and Dad. Is she even capable of working?

“Why won’t you come home and take care of me?” Orion asked, his voice full of blame. “Why don’t you cook for me anymore? I’m sick, and you still won’t come back. You don’t even answer my calls. Are you still my mom? Do you not love me anymore?”

Each question hit Demi like a blow. Her eyes turned red, but she didn’t bother explaining.

He pointed at Demi, his little face full of anger. “You don’t deserve to be my mom! I want Rhea to be my mom. I’ll never call you Mom again!”

Orion had held those emotions in all night. Now, when he was facing Demi, everything came pouring out.

“You’re mean. jealous, and petty!” Orion yelled, his voice hoarse from the fever. “You hate Rhea because she’s better than you! You’re a bad woman who doesn’t even care when her son is sick! I don’t want you as my mom ever again!”

Demi didn’t flinch. She stared at him with no expression, as if none of his words could touch her anymore
