Chapter 20 Heart of Stone

Orion watched his mom pour all her heart into her work, like she didn’t need him or his dad anymore. But he knew one thing: if he made enough of a mess, he could pull her back into reality.
Demi’s temple throbbed. She pointed to the door. “Get out!”
Her voice cut like a whip. The sketch she’d worked on all day lay shredded across the floor.
She tried to hold back her anger, but the sight of torn paper scattered everywhere made her lose control.
Orion was startled by her fury.
For a moment he just stared at her, wide–eyed. Then his anger flared hotter.
His mom had ignored him for days, and now she yelled at him over some stupid drawing?
Demi had always been strict with him, but she had never yelled like this before.
“I’m not leaving!” He screamed hysterically.
“You can’t make me! You’re my mom! You’re supposed to take care of me, not yell at me!”
The more he spoke, the angrier he became. He grabbed the nearest things off a shelf, whatever his hands could reach, and hurled them to the ground.
“That’s for ignoring me!”
Crash!
“That’s for saying you don’t want me!”
Crash!
Orion was still just a kid, but when his temper flared, he was stubborn and explosive. The ceramic decorations on the shelf were soon shattered all over the floor.
“Orion Blackwell!”
Demi’s eyes filled with tears as she watched him.
Was this really the boy she’d raised for six years?
He only stopped when he couldn’t reach the higher shelves.
The office floor was now covered in broken ceramic pieces.
“Rhea was right! You never loved me! You’re just selfish!” Orion shouted, his face red with anger.
“You’re not strict because you care about me. You just want to show off to Dad and everyone else! You raised me to make yourself look good!”

Chapter 20 Heart of Stone
After smashing everything he could, Orion’s anger exploded completely.
Every poisonous word Rhea had whispered into his ear came spilling out.

“You don’t deserve to be my mom! You don’t care whether I’m happy or not! Rhea said kids like me should just have fun and enjoy their childhood however we want!”
His voice broke as he yelled, tears running down his face.
Orion was filled with resentment toward Demi and hurt from all the times she had demanded more of
him.
Demi’s face turned pale. She took two steps back, barely holding herself up at his accusation.
If teaching him to be disciplined and to read and speak two languages from a young age was being too strict, then fine–she would admit it.
But had Orion ever truly been unhappy?
Before Rhea came into their lives, Demi had taken him to Disneyland every year. She had flown with him overseas to dive and explore coral reefs, showing him the beauty of the world.
Orion wiped his tears with his sleeve, his voice trembling. He choked on his sobs. “You’re so mean to me, but I still tried to think of you as a good mom. Rhea actually cares about me–she sneaks me out to play sometimes. You’re just jealous and nasty to her. You even tried to make her leave!”
His small chest heaved with anger and hurt. “Just because I like Rhea a little more, you stopped caring about me! You didn’t visit me when I was in the hospital. You didn’t even want me anymore!”
His voice broke, full of crying and gasps. Every word that came out of his mouth felt like a blade, sharp and cold, stabbing straight into Demi’s chest.
“Demi.”
Phoebe could tell something was really wrong.
“I’m fine,” she said flatly.
Then she turned to Orion, her expression cold as stone. She clenched her teeth and said, “I can’t deal with you anymore. I’ll call your dad to take you home.”
Before Orion could say another word, she pulled out her phone. His angry shouting rose behind her, but she ignored it completely.
Nevin had just gotten back to the villa. He was speaking with Rhea, trying to figure out if Orion had acted strange before he left. That’s when Demi’s call came through.
He picked up right away.
“Come pick up Orion,” Demi said in a clipped tone.
