Chapter 22 The Son She Let Go

Finished

Orion suddenly burst into tears, pointing at Demi as he cried, SShe’s the one who doesn’t want me!

Standing before Nevin, he looked completely heartbroken, as if everything was Demi’s fault.

Supported by Nevin, Demi’s head throbbed with pain. Her vision went dark, and a loud ringing filled her ears until she couldn’t hear a thing.

All she could hear was Orion’s wailing, echoing in her head like distorted noise, sharp enough to split her skull.

The blood rolled down her cheek and splashed onto the floor. It took her a long moment to steady herself.

When she finally lifted her head toward Orion, she realized not only was everything dark, but her vision had also gone so blurry that she couldn’t even see a few feet ahead.

Nevin, take him away,Demi said, her voice faint and uneven.

He’s right. I don’t want him anymore! I can’t handle him!

Even though her sight was blurred, her gaze still found Orion’s face.

Blood was still dripping from her forehead. Every word came out firm and heavy, like a final verdict. Her eyes were cold and drythere wasn’t a single tear in them.

Orion froze. He was young, but even he could feel the unease crawling up his spine.

Before, when Demi said she didn’t want him or refused to cook for him, there was still anger, sadness— something human. She still cared about him.

But now, her eyes were empty. She looked at him the way one might look at a stranger.

Mom! Waaaaa!

Orion finally panicked. He ran forward, trying to hug Demi, but she stepped aside without hesitation.

He froze, tears spilling as he cried even louder. Mom, I’m sorry! I was wrong! Please forgive me! Waaaa!

Demi wasn’t moved. Her expression was cold as she turned away and said to Nevin, Take him. Get out of here!

Her body swayed; she looked like she might collapse any second.

Nevin instinctively reached out to steady her, but she moved away from his hand. Phoebe rushed over and caught Demi just in time.

His face darkened. Nevin wanted to say something, but when he saw the blood still trickling from Demi’s forehead, he said nothing. He just grabbed Orion and pulled him toward the door.

Orion’s cries echoed through the hallway and into the elevator until the sound faded away.

Phoebe’s voice cracked as she pressed tissues to Demi’s wound, trying to stop the bleeding. She quickly helped her into the car and sped toward the hospital.

On the way, Demi sat quietly, her face pale but calm. Not a single tear fell.

Phoebe looked at her with deep worry and sighed. You two used to be so close. How did things get this

bad?

Over the years, Demi had rarely kept in touch, but every now and then, Phoebe would see her posts on Instagrampictures of a happy mother and son, smiling at the camera. The moments looked warm and

perfect.

From the time Orion was a baby, Demi had documented every stage of his life.
