Nevin spoke fast, almost desperate. “As Demi’s best friend, I’m sure you want what’s best for her. We’ve been married for seven years. Our son is six. We’ve always been happy together. You can’t just end a marriage like that overnight.”

Phoebe gave a short, cold laugh. She didn’t bother hiding her irritation, though she didn’t hang up either.

After all, Demi was pregnant.

And no one could say for sure if Demi truly wanted a divorce or if she was just angry.

As an outsider, Phoebe couldn’t tell what Demi really felt. But whatever decision Demi made, she’d stand by her.

“You should be telling all this to Demi,” Phoebe said sharply. “Why are you telling me?”

“Because she won’t see me,” Nevin said quietly.

Nevin’s tone carried rare frustration. He couldn’t believe Demi would really walk away from him and Orion.

But every time he saw her lately, her eyes were filled with coldness and impatience-something no one could fake.

He said at last, “Ms. Lennon, could you please talk to her for me?”

He went straight to the point. “Demi looks gentle, but she’s stubborn. Once she decides on something, no one can change her mind. But you’re her best friend. She listens to you.”

He paused, voice low but steady. “I don’t want to divorce Demi. I never did.”

Phoebe’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t want a divorce? If you don’t want a divorce, then tell me- what exactly do you and your son take Demi for? A live-in maid with a fancy title? Or just your convenient nanny?”

She questioned, “Did you already forget your precious son sent Demi to the hospital? Or does Mr. Blackwell have selective memory?”

“Orion didn’t mean to …” Nevin voice trailed off.

Even he sounded unsure of himself.

Yes, the boy was young, but that didn’t erase what happened. He hadn’t meant to hurt Demi,

but he still did.

Phoebe gave a cold laugh. “So that’s it? He didn’t mean it, and everything’s fine? You think that erases the pain he caused her?” Phoebe snapped, her tone sharp. “Listen, Nevin. If you don’t love Demi, then let her go. Stop using her role as Orion’s mom to guilt her into staying. That’s emotional blackmail, not love.”

Nevin swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “My feelings for Demi haven’t changed in seven years,” he said quietly.

Divorce was never something he dreamed about, but suddenly, Demi was filing a lawsuit against him.

He added softly, “Ms. Lennon, please. Help me talk to her.”

Phoebe rolled her eyes. “Are you really that clueless or are you just playing dumb?”

She cut him off in annoyance. “I’ve got to bring Demi her food, so I’ll make this short. If you really want her back, then clean up your mess. Your side chick is practically rubbing it in Demi’s face, and you’re still acting like you don’t know?”

Nevin frowned. “You mean Rhea?”

He spoke in a weary tone. “Rhea’s just my assistant. There’s nothing between us. I’ve told Demi that over and over, but she just refuses to believe me.”

His tone had grown impatient, maybe even frustrated from repeating the same explanation

way too many

times.

Phoebe let out a cold laugh. She wasn’t about to let Nevin get away with anything. “Well, serves you right for being the ex-husband!”

She roared, “Don’t ever call me again. Whatever Demi decides, I’ll back her up all the way!”

Ugh!

What a jerk!

Fuming, Phoebe hung up without another word.

To Phoebe, Nevin’s impatient tone was crystal clear-he was just irritated because he’d been called out and couldn’t handle it.

Serves him right! Demi should divorce him!

If it weren’t for Demi’s pride, Phoebe would’ve cursed him out loud right then.

Still grumbling under her breath, she packed up the food and headed back to the hospital.
