Chapter 27 Same Old Excuse
During her hospital stay, Demi redrew the illustration that Orion had torn apart.
Using only her memory, she recreated it almost exactly the same as before.
Buzz! Buzz!
Just then, her phone buzzed. It was her mother.
Setting her sketchpad aside, Demi answered softly, “Hey, Mom.”

“Demi, when are you coming home? Your dad and I heard you’d be back soon. We’ve been thinking about you every day.”
“Mom, I still have-

The nurse interrupted, “Ms. Snow, it’s time for your IV. Please hold out your right hand.”
Carol’s voice sharpened through the phone. “IV? You’re in the hospital? Which one? I’m coming right now!”
“Mom, it’s nothing serious,” Demi quickly reassured her. “Just a little cold. You don’t need to come all the way here.”
She didn’t want her mother to worry or to find out that Orion had hit her hard enough to make her bleed.
But Carol was already panicking. “No, I can’t sit still! Driver, get the car ready—”
“Mom, really, I’m fine,” Demi cut in, worried her mother would actually show up. “I’ll be discharged in a couple of days. I promise I’ll come see you and Dad at once.” Quickly changing the subject, Demi asked, “Mom, is my room still the same?”
Carol sighed, recognizing the distraction for what it was.
“It’s just the way you left it. Hmph, your dad acts all calm, but I catch him sneaking into your room sometimes. Says he’s just checking if anything’s missing.”
Demi’s
eyes turned wet.
Carol had no idea what was keeping Demi so busy or why the handover was taking so long. She told her daughter to just come home first. Whatever it was, it could wait. “You can take over the company business and handle those things together.”
Demi only replied, “It’s almost done.”

After finishing a bottle of IV, sleepiness hit Demi hard. She packed up her drawing board and dozed off.
When she woke up, Nevin was there. He’d found out which hospital she was admitted to and had brought her some food.
The moment she opened her eyes and saw him, she felt an instant wave of irritation.
“You must be hungry,” Nevin said, walking to her bedside. “Helga made some dished based on your preferences.” He reached out, trying to help her sit up.
Demi didn’t buy his act. Her voice was sharp with annoyance. “I already told you! Don’t show up unless it’s about the divorce. Nevin, I have nothing left to say to you!”
She pointed toward the door. “Get out.”
Nevin frowned. Had it really come to this? Was she so done with him that even a few words were too much?
“If you don’t want the food, at least have some soup,” he said quietly, pretending not to hear her anger as he opened the thermos.
Demi watched coldly, not even trying to hide her disgust.
Nevin poured the soup and brought it to her lips.
Her eyes stayed frosty.
They stood there, locked in silence, the tension thick enough to cut through.
Nevin set the bowl of soup on the table. “My mom said she misses us. She wants us to go to the estate for dinner.”

Haha!
Demi almost laughed. Oh, so she called. I’m supposed to drop everything and show up?
Before she could respond, Nevin’s phone rang. Of course, it always did. He was the kind of man who placed his work as a priority.
་་
“Mr. Blackwell, I—”
It was Rhea. Nevin glanced at Demi, then turned slightly away as if that could make it better.
