How many times did he have to say it? There was nothing between him and Rhea. Nothing at all.

And Rhea was someone Demi had trained herself. How could she be jealous of her trainee?

“Orion felt awful last night,” Nevin said, his tone heavy. “He cried for hours until his voice went hoarse. He kept calling for you. He said he wanted to see his mom when he woke up.”

Nevin tried to sound dramatic. Demi listened as if he were talking about someone else’s child.

Orion already felt like a stranger to her.

“He didn’t mean to hurt you,” Nevin went on. “He’s still a kid, Demi. He knows he did wrong. Can’t you just come home and comfort him?”

He massaged the bridge of his nose, remembering how Orion had refused breakfast that morning. “This morning, his fever hit 102 degrees again. If this keeps up, it’s going to hurt his health. School’s starting soon. The parent meeting is coming up …

Nevin paused, his dark eyes fixed on her.

“Demi, come home,” he said quietly. “I don’t have time for this anymore. Orion and I—we both need you.”

He wasn’t here to apologize. Nevin just couldn’t function without her taking care of everything.

Now that Orion’s parent-teacher meeting was coming up, suddenly he wanted her home again?

Demi’s heart turned to ice. She remembered all the years she managed every little thing for their son. Every class, every lesson, every routine-she handled it all. Nevin never lifted a finger.

When Orion didn’t want to attend group classes, she spent days researching tutors, finding someone patient enough to teach him one-on-one.

And now?

All those memories only made her feel tired. Completely drained. Demi no longer wanted to talk to him. Without a word, she reached over and pressed the call button beside her hospital

bed.

Soon, the nurse came in.

“This man is disturbing my rest,” Demi said firmly. “Please ask him to leave.”

“Demi, can you stop being unreasonable for once?” Nevin’s voice tightened with frustration. “Can’t you think about Orion? We don’t have to end up like this.”

His expression turned stormy.

Demi turned her back to him without a word. She didn’t want to see his face, much less talk to

him.

The nurse said politely but firmly, “Sir, the patient needs rest. Please leave the room immediately.”

Nevin stood there for a few seconds, his eyes fixed on Demi’s back, as if hoping she would turn around. But she didn’t. When Demi finally heard his footsteps fade away, she let out a long,

tired breath.

“Whew!”

Ten minutes passed before she sat up again. After a moment of thought, she picked up her phone and called Wayne.

“Demi,” Wayne greeted casually, not knowing she was in the hospital.

“Hey, Wayne. Are you busy?” she asked, listening to the quiet background on his end.

“Not really. You’re calling about the divorce?”

“Yeah.” Demi paused, then said softly, “Can we push the case forward? Make it go to court sooner?” She sighed without sound. Demi was done waiting. She didn’t want to fight anymore or be tied up to Nevin any longer.

Wayne stayed quiet for a moment, probably thinking about how to speed up the legal process.

“If needed, we can use the Snow family’s name to apply pressure,” Demi said firmly,

“Did something happen?” Wayne asked.

He could feel her urgency. She couldn’t wait another day to cut ties with Nevin once and for all.
