Carol scoffed. “Stop babbling, old man. Don’t say dumb stuff in front of her.” She shook her head. “She’ll live however she damn well wants. That’s her choice.”

She’d always let Demi call her own shots.

But Orion… That kid…

As a grandmother, Carol had a serious soft spot for him. She doted on him more than she ever expected to.

Meanwhile, back at the Blackwell Villa.

Orion sat on the villa steps, knees pulled in, eyes glued to the driveway like he could will Nevin’s car to appear. He was waiting to sneak off with him and go see his mother.

Dinner was already done by the time Helga finished cooking. But Nevin still hadn’t shown. Orion had tried calling him over and over, but he still didn’t answer.

In the end, it was Helga who finally got through. Nevin told her he was stuck at work and asked her to stay with Orion for the night.

She managed to talk him into eating, then led him upstairs to get ready for bed. As she tucked him in, he suddenly asked, “Helga, Mom keeps throwing up. Do you think she’s having a baby?”

He and Nevin had been trailing after Demi in secret. Nevin never mentioned anything about her being pregnant, but Orion had seen it. More than once, Demi would stop mid-step, cover her mouth, and rush to

the bathroom.

Every time, Nevin got really freaked out.

“She’s pregnant?” Helga blinked, then frowned. “But if that’s true, why are they getting divorced?”

Orion frowned too. So she didn’t know either? And just being pregnant… Does that fix anything?

That thought hit hard. Even for someone his age, it made no sense.

The next morning.

Demi had thrown up so much the night before that she slept straight through till daylight.

When her eyes opened, she froze. She was lying in a room she hadn’t stepped into for years. For one strange second, she felt like she’d been dropped back in time.

Like it was seven years ago.

She sat up, pulled open the bedroom door, and spotted Nevin right there in the living room. The second he saw her, he stood up and walked over.

“You’re awake. You must be starving.”

He stepped closer, studied her face and figure with a little concern. “Go wash up. I’ll bring breakfast over.”

Demi’s lips pressed tight. Nevin still had on the same outfit from yesterday. His hair looked the same. His whole body looked like he hadn’t slept at all.

She crushed down the tiny tremble that stirred in her chest, kept her face neutral, and brushed past him into the bathroom.

By the time she came out, three steaming pies were sitting on the table.

They were from the little hole-in-the-wall shop she’d mentioned the night before. It had been around forever.

The food wasn’t pretty, but it hit the spot. She used to love it.

But once she married Nevin and had Orion, she’d almost stopped going.

“I didn’t know which one you wanted, so I got all three.”

Nevin saw her freeze up and rushed to explain.

The place didn’t have many flavors. Demi only ever ordered three kinds anyway, so he brought them all.

“Alright.”

Her voice was quiet, but she didn’t ignore him.
