Demi had no idea Nevin was already plotting how to “win her back.” He was convinced she was only mad at him and Orion because of the pregnancy hormones.

A sharp breath escaped her as she pushed up from her chair. Her spine popped as she stretched, arms over

her head.

She glanced at the clock.

It was 5:30 p.m., just 30 more minutes till the end of her shift. Nothing urgent was left on her desk, and she’d already finished most of it.

She was still torn on whether to stay and work overtime when her phone rang. It was Orion’s kids’ smartwatch.

That little device still ran on a secondary SIM registered under her name.

Normally, he would’ve used a phone.

She paused for a second before answering.

“Mom! When are you coming home? Grandma said to ask what you wanna eat tonight!”

His voice buzzed with excitement, loud and cheerful.

Demi’s brow tensed. Her tone dropped flat. “Who took you over there?”

She thought it had to be Nevin.

“I … I just really wanted Grandma’s food. So I called her and asked if she could come get me…” He could tell she wasn’t happy. His words rushed out like he was trying to patch something before it broke.

But Demi didn’t respond right away.

If Orion had said he missed Carol’s food, there was no way Carol would’ve said no to him.

A moment later, Demi finally said, “Tell my mom I’m staying late at work. I’ll be home later.”

“Okay.”

Still uneasy, she added, “Orion, don’t give your grandma or grandpa a hard time.”

“I’m not. I’m being good…” His voice dipped. He sounded hurt. Carol and Roderick liked him. He hadn’t done anything wrong.

Demi didn’t say another word. She ended the call.

Over at the Bilingual Immersion School…

Rhea hadn’t even had time to change out of her office clothes. She still wore a crisp pencil skirt and a sharp blouse. She looked like a corporate ad, standing at the school gate with perfect posture.

She turned her head from side to side, scanning the thinning crowd of students.

More and more kids were leaving. Still no sign of Orion

Chapter 94 Misunderstanding

“Orion got picked up a while ago. Maybe give someone a call?”

His homeroom teacher offered the suggestion carefully glancing at Rhea just long enough to be polite.

She’d seen plenty over the years, but a side chick showing up to pick up the actual wife’s kid? That was new.

“Ungrateful little brat.

“Orion, I swear, you ungrateful little bastard!”

Rhea lost it the second she shut the car door. Her voice racked as the anger burst out. She had told him herself that she’d come pick him up. And the kid didn’t even bother to check in.

But Orion was still just a child.

Nevin hadn’t come home last night, and Orion guessed he’d stayed with Demi. So he’d spent the whole school day thinking about his mom.

Just before school let out, he called the number Carol had given him a few nights ago.

The second she heard he wanted to visit, Carol didn’t hesitate. She came and picked him up.

Back at the Blackwell office, Nevin was on his way to go charm Demi when he found out Orion had gone over to the Snow Mansion.

A smile crept up his face. The kid knew how to play the long game. If he couldn’t go straight through Demi, he’d go charm the grandparents.

And the fact that Carol had picked him up herself made Nevin feel even better.

He was more convinced than ever that divorce wasn’t even on the table.

Didn’t matter where their feelings stood right now. Demi was pregnant. They had a six-year-old. Once they worked on the grandparents, things would shift.

At the Snow Mansion.

Orion held back tears. He rushed downstairs to tell Carol that Demi was working late and wouldn’t be home for dinner.

Carol saw the shine in his eyes. It was clear the only reason he came over was because he missed his mom.

“Go tell your Grandpa to call your mom. Tell him she’s not allowed to stay late again tonight. And if she ignores that, I’m going over there myself.”

She was done watching her daughter grind herself down every night.

Most nights, she didn’t even fall asleep until Demi walked through the door. If she had fallen asleep, she could forget about seeing her own daughter.
