“Okay. I’ll go tell Grandpa now.”

Orion stomped his way up the stairs.

Demi’s phone buzzed. It was Roderick. “Your mom just called. If you’re not home in 30 minutes, she’s driving over to drag you back herself.

“She’s worried about you,” he added, voice low and tired. “You didn’t come home last night. She got up a dozen times to check if you’d returned. No one slept.”

Demi’s eyes welled up.

She knew he wasn’t actually mad.

Roderick could fall asleep anywhere. In the middle of conversations. While the TV blasted. With people talking right next to him.

But not last night. Not when both he and Carol had been stuck worrying about her.

“I’ll be home soon.”

“What do you want for dinner? I’ll tell the housekeeper

“I don’t really care. Whatever’s fine.”

“Alright. I’ll let her decide. Just drive safe.”

“I will.”

She hung up. For a moment, she sat there frozen, her eyes locked on nothing. Then she quietly cleared her desk.

As she stepped into the hallway, a cheery voice greeted her.

“Heading out, Ms. Snow?” Demi paused. The cleaning lady was still working the floor buffer like a pro. The machine hummed steadily while the floor behind her gleamed like fresh wax.

It looked spotless. Like no one had ever stepped on it.

She works really hard.

Demi blinked. Now that she thought about it, every time she came out, this woman was always out there, cleaning the exact same hallway.

She gave her a small nod, lips pressed together.

Yeah. She deserved a raise.

By the time Demi stepped into the Snow Mansion, Orign was on the floor, deep in a fort of blocks. Roderick sat with him, smiling as the kid stacked pieces. A massive box of new toys sat open. He must’ve gone out and bought the whole aisle.

“Hey, Dad.”

Demi called out and kept walking. Before Orion could even turn his head, she was already up the stairs.

“Mom…” He wilted. Roderick reached over, gave his shoulder a pat, and said something low to distract him.

When Demi came back down, Carol was still in the kitchen, apron on, stirring something at the stove. Orion had moved on. Now he was glued to Carol’s side, shoving fruit chunks onto little plastic skewers and feeding them to her with exaggerated care.

“Grandma, have some tea. You’ve been çooking forever.

“Grandma, try this apple. It’s crazy sweet.

“Grandma…”

Clearly, he’d given up trying to win Demi over and gone all-in on charming Carol.

In less than ten minutes, the entire fruit tray was gone.

“Orion, stop. If she wants to eat, she’ll eat. She doesn’t need you feeding her.”

Demi finally snapped. Carol wasn’t the type to turn Orion down, but come on… She was basically full on just fruit now.

“Okay.” Orion blinked, finally realizing what he’d done.

“It’s fine. I love the fruit you feed me,” Carol said sweetly

That made him beam again.

Outside, Nevin sat in the car. He didn’t go in.

He figured they needed time. Demi and Orion hadn’t been okay lately.

Orion had said things that cut deeper than he understood.

But moms don’t hold onto things forever. Not when it comes to their kids.

Inside the dining room, the table was packed with food Carol had made herself. Everyone sat down together. Orion tossed out a few goofy comments, earning non-stop laughter from both grandparents.

Then, all of a sudden, he looked straight at Demi. “Mom, are you having a baby?”
