Chapter 96 Child Talk
“I heard Dad talking to Helga. He said you’ve been throwing up a lot,” Orion mumbled.
He blinked, eyes fixed on Demi’s stomach. “Mom, does that mean we’re having a baby?”
There wasn’t a trace of sadness in his voice.

Demi let out a slow breath. She’d already made up her mind about cutting ties with Nevin and his kid, but even so, she didn’t want Orion to get hurt because of her
“Orion, come try my meatballs.” Carol said gently, watching them both with concern. “See this one? You helped roll it.”
She picked one up and dropped it in his plate.
“Mom, look! I made this one. It’s super round!” Orion grinned as he pointed it out.
The second she changed the subject, the baby talk disappeared from his mind.
He lit up even more when Demi finally smiled at him.
He struggled to pick up the meatball without dropping but still tried to serve one to everyone like a little
host.
After dinner, Carol played with him in the living room for half an hour. She was about to call the housekeeper to get a room ready for Orion to stay the night.
But Demi had already called Nevin.
Knowing he was nearby, she walked Orion to the front door. Right on cue, Nevin pulled into the driveway.
“Demi, can we talk?”
The moment Nevin stepped out, Demi turned away without answering. He called out to stop her.
She paused. Her voice came out flat. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
Nevin’s face darkened. Had she really gotten to the point where she couldn’t even speak to him?
“Dad…”
Orion must’ve felt the tension. He slipped his hand into Nevin’s.
Nevin looked down and met his eyes.
They both looked up again, watching Demi walk
away.
She could feel their eyes on her back. Heavy. Pressing.
But she didn’t turn around.
She couldn’t.
Not after Nevin had defended Rhea so many times, whether he meant to or not. Not after Orion had told her, over and over, that Rhea was nicer to him.

Demi didn’t get to work late for several days in a row. Carol made sure of it, forcing her to come home on time.
“Mom, you’re home! You must be tired. Let me rub your shoulders,” Orion said the second she stepped inside.
He handed her water, then fruit, doing whatever he could to get close to her.
It was like he’d finally figured out how to stay in her orb again.
If he missed his grandparents, he showed up at the Snow Mansion.
If he got a sticker at school, he ran over to show them.
Even a mosquito bite became a reason to come by and complain.
Nevin started showing up too, claiming he was just there to pick Orion up. He stuck around for dinner. Twice.
“Demi, don’t be fooled. Orion’s little hands are surprisingly strong,” Carol said from behind him.
She watched Demi head straight for the stairs like she always did, dodging anything that felt like connection.
