It Doesn’t Matter Anymore novel Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Three days later, in the noisiest bar in San Antonio.

Greyson slumped in the corner of the VIP lounge, empty bottles scattered all over the floor at his feet.

His face was covered in stubble, and the shirt that was usually immaculate on him was now wrinkled like pickled vegetables. His eyes were deeply sunken, and there was not a trace left of the cold, hard Colonel he used to be.

The door to the lounge was suddenly flung open, and his childhood friend Cade Yates strode in. Seeing Greyson in such a sorry state, Cade’s brows furrowed tightly. He marched over, grabbed Greyson by the collar, and yanked him up from the sofa.

“Greyson! Look at yourself! What do you look like right now!”

Greyson’s eyes were bleary with drunkenness, and he mumbled indistinctly, “Allison… Allison emptied out the house…”

Cade was so furious that the veins on his temples throbbed. He raised his fist and landed a heavy punch on Greyson’s face!

With a loud “bang,” Greyson’s head was knocked to the side, blood seeping from the corner of his mouth. But he only numbly wiped it away with the back of his hand, as if he couldn’t feel the pain at all.

“What the hell are you pretending to be so sentimental for now?” Cade refused to let go of him, cursing angrily, “Allison is such a good girl.

For the past three years, how has she treated you? All of us brothers have seen it clearly! She would have given you her heart if she could, and what about you? You threw her heart on the ground and stomped on it!”

“Whenever Sylvia shed a tear, you lost your mind! When Allison had a high fever and burns, you made her cook! When Allison was taken away by the police, you were having tea with Sylvia! Is your heart made of stone?”

Greyson’s eyes were empty, and he did not argue back.

Cade grew even angrier and shoved him back onto the sofa hard. “Do you remember last winter, when you had the flu and a fever of 40 degrees? Allison stayed up for three days and nights to take care of you, wiping you down every half hour to bring your temperature down! In the end, she collapsed from exhaustion herself, but she was afraid you’d worry, so she forced herself not to tell me! And you? What were you doing? You were fixing Sylvia’s plumbing!”

“You always say it’s about responsibility, about Carson. But in my eyes, you’re just stupid! Blind!”

“Do you even know whose name you call out every time you get drunk and cling to me? It’s Allison! Not Sylvia! Last time you came back from a mission, you went out of your way to buy that silk scarf, saying you thought Allison would look great in it. And what happened? Sylvia said she liked it, and you gave it to her!”

Cade leaned in closer, gritting his teeth. “Greyson, ask yourself honestly, do you really not love Allison? You’ve been in love with her for a long time! Loved her to your very bones! But you’re too arrogant,

treasuring that little obsession from your youth that you could never get, and you drove away the one who truly loves you-and whom you love-with your own hands!”
