It Doesn’t Matter Anymore novel Chapter 29

Chapter 29

After recovering, I paid the fine for entering the restricted area without permission. As soon as I stepped outside, a group of women surrounded me, their voices filled with spite and accusation. Leading them was none other than

Lorelai’s close friends.

She’s the wicked woman who caused Lorelai’s injury!

She’s a murderer! She pushed Lorelai to explore the mountains, and that’s why things went wrong!

The group advanced toward me, their words sharp and threatening. Just as I was about to lift my bag in selfdefense, a man stepped in front of me.

Stop spreading lies here! Lorelai went of her own choice and caused trouble!

It was James, unmistakably missing an arm.

James, you heartless jerk! Lorelai is bedridden, living a life worse than death, and you’re here defending your ex? Are

you even a man?

James lunged forward with fierce energy, scaring the group into retreating.

If Lorelai hadn’t insisted on coming with us, Roselyn and I wouldn’t have nearly died in those mountains! This is her

own doing!

Listening to James defend me didn’t fill me with gratitude; instead, it felt nauseating. I stepped back, hoping to slip

away.

James turned, gripping my shoulder with his one good hand, his eyes intense.

Roselyn, are you okay?

I shook my head, indicating for him to let go. He hovered closer, trying to make small talk. What a coincidence, I’m here to pay a fine too. I heard you’re transferring to another city soon?

Looking at him now, with his sunken eyes and weary demeanor, I couldn’t help but recall how he had abandoned me in the Alps, fleeing in terror. Without realizing it, I muttered, Serves you right.

He seemed startled but forced a smile.

Roselyn, I’ve realized now. We’ve shared so many years together; our relationship can’t just end. Let me come with you to New York City.

Still the same presumptuous attitude, making decisions without consulting me first.

I chuckled, I heard you got fired. Well, that makes sensehow would you take photos with just one hand?

James, you know the answer. Stop fooling yourself.

I turned and walked toward the exit. James rushed ahead of me and fell to his knees.

Tears welled up in his eyes as he pleaded, RosieI know I was wrong. Forgive me. I have nothing left but you.

If you’re really a man, stand up. Don’t make me look down on you,I said.

He stubbornly clung to my feet, but one hand couldn’t hold both my legs. I broke free, and he fell facefirst onto the ground.

He pounded the floor and shouted after me, Roselyn, if you’re going to be so heartless, don’t blame me for being

ruthless!

A deep sorrow washed over me, a lament for what once was and could no longer be. A once proud man and the woman who adored him, now mere reflections in a fractured mirror, each taking their separate paths.

After transferring to New York City, rumors spread like wildfire. They claimed the exploration accident was due to my negligence that it was my decision to send the team into the restricted zone that led to disaster.
