The next day, I was in my office, casually browsing the internet. My fingers glided over the mouse when I suddenly noticed that a video I had posted had gone viral. It featured Lorelai and James being particularly close during our expedition in the Alps. While it was intended to highlight their bond, the viewers‘ comments were overwhelmingly
critical.
“James totally plays favorites. Roselyn’s the dependable one, yet he only has eyes for Lorelai,” one person commented. Another was harsher: “Roselyn is the real geologist here, and Lorelai got what she deserved for always stirring things up!” There were also dissenting voices: “Was it necessary to shoot the bear like that? I wish people would stop recklessly entering restricted areas.”
I sifted through the comments, emotions swirling. Once, I had been James’s girlfriend, his favoritism and Lorelai’s carelessness all too apparent to me. But now, I was no longer the Roselyn who needed him.
James must have seen the comments too. He started trying all sorts of ways to win me back–public apologies and promises to change. He just couldn’t learn. He bombarded me with messages on WhatsApp:
“Roselyn, I know I was wrong; I shouldn’t have left you. You’re the woman I should always have protected, and I’m willing to change, to be the man you need.”
Reading these messages no longer sickened me. Instead, I felt an unfamiliar calm. I replied, “James, you don’t need to change for me. I wish you happiness.” With that, I blocked him.
Undeterred, he took to social media, publicly apologizing:
“To all my followers, I, James Williams, made the biggest mistake of my life. I neglected Roselyn’s feelings. She’s a brilliant geologist and an incredible partner. It’s my fault for not treasuring her. I will change. Please, everyone, help me convince her to give me another chance.”
Of course, the online community hit back at him even harder.
“Did you realize this when you put Roselyn in danger with that bear in the mountains?” “Why don’t you just disappear, you vile man?” “Stop the act. You just want to get close to Roselyn now that you’re broke!” “You make me
sick! How can someone be so shameless?”
Brands he had once partnered with swiftly cut ties, leaving him–from renowned photographer to outcast.
Somehow, James managed to get my new number. Desperately, he called, “Roselyn, where are you? I want to apologize on my knees. Let’s start anew.”
I took a deep breath, “James, it’s over. I don’t need your apologies or your promises to change. I need someone who respects and supports me, and you’re no longer that person.”
He was silent on the other end. After a moment, he said, “Roselyn, I truly was wrong.” His voice trembled as if he were on the verge of tears. I shook my head, even though he couldn’t see me. After a minute of silence, I hung up.
It seemed James understood my determination, as he didn’t contact me again. Yet shortly after, he traveled all the way to see me, hoping for another chance. But I was resolute; his words wouldn’t sway me.
His voice was urgent and tinged with a hint of desperation. “Roselyn, I’ve changed… I truly have, come back to me. I only have eyes for you.” As sweat formed on my forehead, he tried to reach out and wipe it away.
I quickly recoiled, taking a deep breath to steady my emotions. “James, cut the self–pity, stop pretending! Do you think I don’t know you’re broke and can’t even afford a meal? In the Alps, you noticed Lorelai’s bleeding scratches but ignored my swollen foot, where every step was agony! And let’s not forget you left me behind… with that bear trailing me. I may be skilled, but I’m still a woman. Imagine being stalked by a bear… do you know how terrified I was?”
“In the end, you pushed me towards that bear; well… thank goodness it wasn’t me it was after.” Recalling this made my hand tremble, and I spilled some coffee, staining the table.
He was speechless. “I…”
