Chapter 93

Liora glanced at Zachary, then lowered her eyes to the small book in her hands.

“It’s quite something,” she signed to him.

“I once bought this as a gift for someone I loved. Now, it’s become a reward for finally convincing myself to face the past She took the book and gave Zachary a gentle smile of gratitude.

Only after the elevator carrying Liora reached the ground floor did Zachary turn and head back into his office.

“Dr. Hanley, wasn’t that the dancer you really like?” the receptionist asked, leaning forward with a conspiratorial tone. “Wait, is she the one you left that conference in Manhattan early just to see her perform?” the other receptionist chimed in, clearly intrigued.

Just a few days ago, Dr. Hanley had attended a three-day academic seminar in Manhattan. He’d cut it short and flown back early just to watch a certain ballerina’s performance.

Zachary smiled. “You can gossip in front of me all you want, but be careful what you say in front of Ms. Hughes. She’s a patient.”

“Got it! Totally!” The two receptionists nodded enthusiastically.

“She’s so beautiful, Dr. Hanley.”

“It’s just a pity she’s mute…”

The girl who said it realized her mistake the moment the words left her mouth.

Zachary’s smile faded slightly. “Ms. Hughes chooses not to speak. She’s not mute.”

With that, he turned and went straight into the consultation room.

The receptionist who spoke out of turn smacked her lips in frustration, clearly regretting her words.

After leaving Zachary’s practice, Liora checked her phone.

WhatsApp was blowing up.

May had sent several messages after getting no response from her.

“I heard Lucas is divorcing you. No matter what happens, Liora, you’re still a Hughes. Blood is thicker than water. The Hughes family will always be your safety net.”

“Come home. Talk with your uncle. We’ll help you figure out your next steps. Whatever we can do, we’ll do.”

“Liora, I’m after all your aunt, and every word I’ve said is for your own good. What does it mean that you won’t even reply?”

“Where are you? I’ll send a driver to pick you up.”

“Liora, have you no manners at all? Answer the phone!”

Liora let out a cold laugh and quickly typed a response with her slender fingers:

“No need to butter me up. Save it.”

As soon as May read the message, she exploded.

“That little bitch!” She shot up from her seat and immediately fired off a 60-second voice message, furiously cursing Liora.

But when she sent it, a red exclamation mark popped up.

Liora had blocked her.

May was so enraged she felt like she might burst a blood vessel.

*If she’s not coming, what the hell am I supposed to do about this baby?” Jennie snapped, growing more anxious by the minut *The longer this thing grows inside me, the more dangerous it gets to remove!”

“What are you panicking for? You think she can run forever?” Chad sneered. ‘If she won’t come back, go fint her Jennie still wasn’t satisfied.

She’d called Lucas earlier today, and he hadn’t picked up. He just sent a half-hearted reply on WhatsApp saying he wou The closer she got to getting what she wanted, the more restless she felt.

Jennie was panicking.

Thirty days of waiting time was too long. Anything could happen.

She needed to make Lucas hate Liora completely-fast.

If she could, she’d have Liora thrown in prison and be done with it.

Just then, Jennie’s phone rang.

It was saved under “Auntie”, a senior relative from Lucas’s grandfather’s side.

Jennie immediately straightened up and softened her tone.

“Auntie…”

*Jennie, I just heard from the housekeeper that Liora is on her way to the old estate. It’s probably about the divorce. I’m afraid she’ll pull something again and convince the old man and lady to talk Lucas out of it!”

“I… I understand, Auntie. But there’s nothing I can do…”

“Jennie, your belly is already showing. Even if you won’t fight for yourself, fight for your child. You want your baby to be born a bastard?”

Her voice was ice cold. “If you can’t handle this, go straight to Lucas and make sure he’s ready.”

“I… I will.”

The call ended.

Jennie’s sweet expression vanished. She hurled her phone across the room.

“That bitch really is trying to backtrack!”

“You need to tell Lucas right away!” May urged her. “Those two blind old fools! After everything that happened with their mute daughter, they still poured all their love and guilt into her. They treat her like she’s made of gold. If she goes crying and playing victim, you’re done for!”

Jennie didn’t dare waste another second.

But she still remembered Lucas’s warning.

He didn’t want any more entanglement between her and Liora.

Left with no other option, Jennie used the anonymous number she’d been using to harass Liora to send Lucas a message “Mr. Chandler, your ex-wife changed her mind. She’s trying to stop the divorce and has gone to the Shannons for help!”

Liora really had gone to the Shannons.

The moment the old lady heard she was coming, she excitedly had the kitchen start preparing all her favorite dishes. Then sh headed outside the estate and paced back and forth as she waited.

The taxi slowly came to a stop.

The old lady walked up warmly.

As soon as Liora stepped out, she took her hand. “My sweet girl, it’s been so long since you came to visit Grandma. You haver answered a single message. I’ve been so worried.”

The woman before her was full of affection and concern, just like the day Liora first returned to them.

The old lady paused, a little caught off guard.
