Clive’s head was pounding, the kind of dull ache that comes with a hangover and not enough sleep. He rubbed his temples, closed his eyes, and drew in a slow breath. “I get it, Mom. Don’t stress. I’ll have someone look for her.”
He hung up, slumped onto the sofa, and called Aiden, asking him to dig up any info on Caroline’s whereabouts. He barely made it halfway through a cigarette before his phone buzzed again.
“Mr. Salmeron, Ms. Salmeron boarded a flight to Yedar Island three hours ago,” Aiden reported.
Clive’s expression darkened. Yedar Island was a major hub, with an international airport that connected to nearly everywhere. She could be anywhere by now—there was no way they’d catch her.
He dialed Cameron. Out of everyone he knew, Cameron was the only one with ties to the military.
As soon as Cameron answered, Clive cut in. “Is there any way you can find out where Felix’s mission is this time?”
Cameron was silent for a few seconds before it clicked. “Wait—Caroline’s still chasing after Felix? She went after him again?”
Clive didn’t answer, but his silence said it all.
Cameron sounded stunned. “How does she even get his travel plans?”
“Can you get them or not?” Clive pressed.
Cameron hesitated. “I’m not sure. I mean, I could try to find out, but asking around could get messy. I heard something happened with Felix—he didn’t leave with the rest of his unit. The Baker family’s worried sick. Anyone poking around right now is just asking for trouble with them.”
Clive frowned, jaw tight.
He didn’t even care how Caroline got the information anymore. He just wanted her back, safe. Felix was in the most dangerous places, doing life-or-death missions. Caroline had been pampered her whole life—she had no idea what she was getting herself into.
Amelia had been right—Caroline was a spoiled brat. But she was his sister, his only sister.
“Just try for me, okay?” Clive said softly. “If anything goes wrong, I’ll take the heat. If something happens to Caroline, my mom won't survive it. Please.”
That was all Cameron needed to hear. They’d grown up together—he couldn’t say no.
Cameron let out a long sigh. “Fine. I’ll see what I can find out. Don’t worry too much. Maybe Caroline’s just being dramatic. Once she sees how dangerous it is, she’ll probably come home.”
Clive dropped his phone and leaned back, suddenly feeling the exhaustion hit him all at once. He closed his eyes and listened to the quiet footsteps approaching from behind.
A pair of warm, gentle hands landed on his head, massaging his aching temples.
Liana.
He didn’t open his eyes, didn’t push her away.
After a minute, Liana bent down and asked softly, “Want to stay for breakfast? I saw your fridge was empty when I got here, so I picked up some groceries. I’ll cook something up—it’ll be quick.”
She was smart—she didn’t bring up last night, or ask who he’d thought she was.
If she had asked, Clive would have told her the truth.
He didn’t care enough to lie to Liana.
Penny saw her chance. “Mommy, can you do my hair in a bun today? And use the crystal clip with the princess crown?”
“Of course, sweetheart,” Amelia replied with a smile.
After breakfast, Amelia did Penny’s hair, her heart melting as she watched her daughter’s sweet, doll-like face in the mirror.
She drove the kids to school herself.
On the way, Penny chattered nonstop about everything—school gossip, stuff at home, anything that popped into her head.
“Oh, I want to call Auntie Caroline!” Penny suddenly remembered. “I need to see if she’s feeling better, and tell her to get up and eat breakfast.”
Amelia didn’t say anything.
She and the Salmerons didn’t get along—she doubted she’d ever set foot in their house again. But the Salmerons were good to Timmy and Penny, and even though Caroline was a handful, she really cared about Penny.
Amelia didn’t want adult drama to spill over onto the kids.
Penny used her smartwatch to call Caroline, but no one answered.
“Auntie’s probably still sleeping in,” Penny muttered.
She left a voice message anyway, reminding Caroline to wake up and eat a good breakfast.
