Clive was pleased with her tact. Giving Liana a curt nod, he carried Penny away.
Resting her head on Clive's shoulder, Penny watched the woman who looked exactly like her mother waving at her—even her wave was just like Mommy's...
"Daddy," Penny couldn't help but say. "She looks just like Mommy."
"I know." Clive's response was flat. "Penny, there are a lot of people in this world who look alike. No matter how much she resembles her, she isn't your mommy. Besides, you won't ever see her again."
Initially, his brief affair with Liana was entirely because of her resemblance to Amelia.
A poor, beautiful college student with just enough ambition but the sense to know her place—she was an easy, novel distraction he could fully control. But that was all she was: a way to kill time and stave off loneliness.
He was never going to actually let Liana into his life.
Now, Ryan was dead.
It wasn't impossible for Amelia to accept him again. They had been married for so many years. Even if he couldn't compete with Ryan, surely he could beat Felix Baker?
"Daddy."
"What is it, sweetheart?"
Penny sniffled and wrapped her arms around Clive's neck. "When is Mommy going to leave the hospital and come home? I miss her."
"Soon," Clive said, patting his daughter's back gently. "Mommy will be discharged very soon. Maybe in a little while, she'll bring your brother and move back in with us."
"Really?" Penny's large eyes instantly lit up.
Clive smiled and tapped his daughter's nose. "That depends on whether you're willing to help Daddy."
"I am, I am! A hundred times yes!"
