Clive held his phone tightly and spoke in a low voice. “Got it. Thanks, Cameron. I owe you one.”
Cameron replied, “Don’t mention it. Tell your mom not to worry. I’ve already talked to someone in the military. If Caroline is among the hostages, they’ll make sure she’s one of the first to come home.”
“Okay.”
Clive had barely put his phone down before Mrs. Salmeron rushed over, barely holding back her anxiety. “Well? Did you hear anything about Caroline?”
He quickly repeated what Cameron had just told him.
Mrs. Salmeron grabbed his arm, her voice trembling with hope. “So you’re saying if the kidnappers get Amelia, I’ll get my Caroline back?”
Clive was already on edge, and it showed on his face. “Get her back for what? She loves running off, she loves Felix—maybe she should just stay there.”
Mrs. Salmeron glared at him, clearly not having it. “How can you say something like that? She’s your sister! This is all Amelia’s fault—she messed up your life during the divorce, and now that you’re divorced, she knows Caroline likes Felix, but she still goes after him—”
“Mom!” Clive finally lost it and cut her off. “This has nothing to do with Amelia! She’s seeing someone else now. How is it Amelia’s fault that Felix doesn’t like Caroline? Amelia’s already got a boyfriend!”
Mrs. Salmeron was stunned for a second. “What? You two haven’t even been divorced that long, and she’s already with someone else?” Her expression twisted, bitter and suspicious. “I get it now. She must’ve been cheating on you before the divorce was final! No wonder she was so desperate to leave!”
Clive stared at his mother, feeling a headache coming on. “Mom, Amelia went to save people. There are over three hundred hostages, and she’s facing dangerous criminals. There’s a real chance she won’t make it back. She’s still the mother of my kids—can’t you just be a little kind to her?”
Mrs. Salmeron looked at him in disbelief. “Clive, are you seriously scolding your own mother over that ex-wife of yours? Don’t forget—it was her clinging to you, wanting to marry up in the first place!”
Clive didn’t want to argue anymore. He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door. “I’m going out for some air.”
“Hey, if you hear anything about your sister, you let me know right away!” Mrs. Salmeron shouted after him, still worried.
Clive didn’t even answer. He walked out, got in his car, and started driving with no destination in mind. At some point, he found himself parked outside the apartment complex where Amelia used to live with Timmy.
He sat there, staring at the entrance, his chest tight. He’d bought the apartment below hers, and after she moved out, he bought the one she’d lived in, too… He’d even found another girl who looked a lot like her back then…
It wasn’t until he’d truly lost Amelia that he realized he’d loved her all along.
He closed his eyes and leaned back in the seat, his thoughts a mess.
Why did the kidnappers specifically ask for Amelia?
She blinked at him, trying to play it cool, but she couldn’t quite hide the hope in her eyes.
Clive found himself thinking of Amelia, years ago.
Amelia had never been the pushy or outgoing type. When she’d asked him to the movies, she’d make up some excuse about getting a discount for two tickets.
If he acted hesitant, she’d quickly say it was fine and that she didn’t really want to see that movie anyway… but the disappointment in her eyes always gave her away.
Clive looked at Liana and managed a small smile. “Sure. Let’s see what you can do.”
Liana’s eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly masked it.
She’d been happy to see Clive’s car, but she was realistic—she knew he wasn’t here for her.
She understood her place, and she knew exactly what she wanted from this arrangement.
She didn’t expect love from a man like Clive. She just needed to get what she wanted.
