The caregiver almost choked, rolling her eyes discreetly. Last night, when Amelia had a fever, this guy was nowhere to be seen. But here he was in the morning, playing the devoted husband while delivering breakfast. What an act. Men really were better at pretending than even a trash bag could be at holding garbage.

She didn’t kick him out, but she didn’t let him in, either. He could call himself her husband all he wanted, but for all she knew, he could be trouble.

Daniel borrowed a plastic chair from the nurse’s station and settled down outside the room, answering emails on his phone as he waited. Even with a ten-dollar chair beneath him, he managed to look like he belonged in a boardroom with a gold-plated nameplate.

A faint noise came from inside the room. Daniel immediately set his phone aside, picked up the insulated breakfast bag, and pushed open the door.

Amelia was up, shuffling half-awake to the bathroom. The sudden appearance of a man in the doorway startled her, his figure backlit and indistinct in the glow from the hallway.

“Unbelievable,” she muttered, annoyed. Even in her dreams, he found a way to show up. What bad luck.

Daniel stepped inside, glancing first at the small child asleep in bed, then at Amelia. He kept his voice low. “What was that you just said?”

Huh? Not a dream, then.

Amelia blinked, a little more awake now. His hair was perfectly styled, his tailored suit impeccable. Yep, it was really him.

She noticed the breakfast bag in his hand and pieced it together—he’d probably shown up for a free breakfast, bumped into Ashley, who was coming to deliver it, and intercepted it to play the thoughtful husband.

They stared silently at each other for a long ten seconds: one freshly groomed and sharp, the other bleary-eyed with sleep crusted in the corners.

“Breakfast is here. Now you can leave,” Amelia said flatly before disappearing into the bathroom.

After a quick wash, she came out expecting him to be gone, only to find Daniel sitting on the couch. The dim hospital light couldn’t dull his air of privilege.

“Why are you still here?” she snapped. She didn’t want him at the hospital; she was already in a foul mood and needed someone to blame.

Daniel nodded at the breakfast bag. “I’ll go after you eat.”

She knew he wouldn’t give up until he got his way, so she grabbed the bag and headed for the staff lounge.

Her head was so low it nearly dipped into her bowl.

Daniel watched her, recognizing the familiar posture. Usually, in moments like this, she was cursing him in her head, hiding her expression so he couldn’t see.

The thought almost made him laugh out of pure frustration. He called her name softly, “Amelia.”

She didn’t look up.

He tried to lighten the mood. “You know, you seem pretty healthy yourself. How come Ruby’s so fragile? Maybe she takes after her dad? I’ve read that poor sperm quality can affect a child’s health, you know.”

The air went still for two seconds.
