Today, for some reason, Martha was particularly insistent that Lisa went home with her—so much so that she made it clear there was no room for negotiation.
Lisa and Logan exchanged glances but ultimately decided not to challenge someone currently going through menopause.
Lisa's house wasn't far from the Cohen residence, so the three of them walked back together.
On the way, Lisa played with the shadows as she walked, looking quite happy.
But Baldwin could tell something was off. "Liz, your mom has been staring at me all day, and I think she's getting tired of it. She probably just wants a change of scenery.
"Honestly, we should've had a couple more kids back then."
"It's not too late. There have already been several cases of people having kids in their 60s," Lisa replied smoothly.
She turned to Martha with a mischievous smile. "Ms. Cohen, if you're interested, I'd be happy to help make it happen."
Martha shot her a sharp glare. "You two really have nothing better to talk about? Have some shame."
"Reproduction and the continuation of humanity is one of the greatest miracles. What's there to be ashamed of?" Lisa teased deliberately.
She had a feeling Martha's insistence on bringing her home had something to do with catching her and Logan being affectionate earlier.
Martha rolled her eyes at her again before turning to Baldwin, who had had a bit to drink and was slightly tipsy.
"All you ever care about is filling your belly and drinking your fill. You don't bother with anything else. How can you be so carefree?"
But, Baldwin didn't get flustered by the scolding. Instead, he grinned. "Because you've already taken care of everything I could worry about."
A single sentence that hit the nail on the head.
It wasn't that he didn't want to handle things, it was just that Martha had already done it all, so there was nothing left for him to do. It was his way of telling her that she was overworking herself by choice.
Baldwin wasn't a man of many words, but when he spoke, he could be quite powerful.
However, Martha wasn't having it. She raised her hand and smacked him lightly. "The biggest regret of my life was marrying you."
"Well, make sure you remember that in the next life. Don't marry me again," Baldwin joked, making Martha both angry and helpless. She could only use her fists to playfully punch him.
If he had responded with something like "It's not too late to regret it now," the conversation would have taken a very different turn.
