Lisa started coughing abruptly.

Even a real son-in-law wouldn't act so close with the wife's mother, let alone a fake one.

She stared at him blankly. Xander winked at her, offering a reassuring smile. Then, he began introducing himself to Martha on the phone. "Mrs. Carline, Liz and I have been together for a few months now. She was just afraid you might not approve of me, so she didn't dare introduce me to you... Yeah, yeah, we're keeping our relationship under wraps now."

Lisa rolled her eyes, thinking to herself, "What nonsense is this guy talking about?"

She tried to grab the phone from Xander, not wanting him to continue with his fabricated story. But he dodged her attempt and kept talking. "Mrs. Carline, I'm her boyfriend, for real... Otherwise, why would she be at my place this late, right?"

Lisa was impressed by his quick thinking and silver tongue. She realized hiring him as her fake boyfriend might have been one of her smartest decisions.

"Okay, I'll let you talk to her," he said, having finished his introduction. He handed the phone back to Lisa.

She took the phone and meekly said, "Mom."

"Lisa, I'm your mother! Why are you treating your relationship like it's some kind of secret mission? Why did you have to hide it from me?" Martha sounded displeased.

"Bring your boyfriend over tomorrow, and I'll take a look at him," she commanded. Before hanging up, she added, "You've got me worried for nothing."

Lisa knew exactly what she was worried about—Logan.

After hanging up, she felt like she had narrowly dodged a bullet.

Xander looked at her. "Was my performance to your liking?"

She gave him a thumbs-up, but after being startled by Martha, she lost her appetite for the rest of the gnocchi.

His voice was unusually cold. "You found some random guy to pretend to be your boyfriend, and even moved into his place. Aren't you worried about your safety at all?"

Lisa groaned and placed her hand on her forehead. She had gotten away with lying to Martha, but Logan was a different story.

She decided to come clean. "This is all because you forced me into it."

Logan wanted to say that he wasn't pressuring her. He had been laying the groundwork to help her prepare for this.

"Uncle Logan, Mom just called. She suspects there's something between us—that's why you cut ties with the Cohens. She's already so emotional just from suspecting it. Have you thought about what would happen if we really did have something?"

She found the courage to tell him over the phone what she couldn't say in person.
