"Let me put it this way. My heart races differently when I'm with him. I understand what that means, but our relationship is complicated. Even though he's not related to me by blood, it's still wrong." Lisa admitted her feelings.
All her concerns and reservations were due to Logan's identity.
I asked, "What if he could resolve everything, including the issues with your parents and grandparents?"
She gave a bitter smile. "Can he stop others from talking?"
"Are you living for others? Who doesn't gossip? Who hasn't been talked about behind their back?" I tried to reason with her.
"Maddie, humans are social creatures, so it's impossible not to care about what others think." She blew a strand of hair out of her face.
Tiffany came running over, her face beaming with joy. "Madeline, I found a picture on this leaf!"
She showed me the leaf, pointing at it. "Madeline, doesn't this look like a turtle lying there?"
Indeed, it did resemble a turtle.
Lisa was generous with her compliments. "You're so observant, Tiffany. That's amazing."
"Lisa, this one's for you. I'll go find another one with a picture for Madeline." She ran off again.
She watched her go, sighing. "She's so happy at this age. I wish I could go back to being a kid and never grow up."
Logan appeared then, walking toward us. "Liz, I need to talk to you."
She froze, looked at him, then at me, and understood everything.
She hesitated for a moment before following Logan. At the door, Tiffany saw them and ran over, but instead of talking to Lisa, she looked up at Logan. "Sir, wait for me to grow up. When I grow up, I want to be your girlfriend."
Both Lisa and I were surprised by her words. Lisa coughed lightly. "When you grow up, he'll be an old man."
Logan's jawline tensed, his expression sharp. "I'll ask you one more time. Do you really not want to be with me?"
Lisa met his gaze for a few seconds before lowering her head. "Uncle Logan, please stop pressuring me. Can't we just go back to the way things were before?"
A strong gust of wind blew by, lifting her loose hair. A strand swept across his cheek, wrapping and unwinding...
As if she had tangled herself around his heart.
Lisa raised her hand to tidy her hair. Logan's melodious voice reached her ears. "Fine, I won't bother you again. We'll go back to how things were before."
Her hand froze mid-motion as she was fixing her hair. She slowly looked up, but he had already turned away.
His towering form vanished into the night, swept away by the icy wind. It felt as though he were dragging Lisa's heart with him into a frozen abyss.
