I knew Sally didn't mean any harm, but what about others?
In today's society, there weren't many who truly wished you well. Even those who did wouldn't want you to be better off than them.
Had I been too high-profile lately?
Had I attracted envy and jealousy?
But, I didn't even promote Serenity Tea House. The customers who came here did all the advertising for me.
Perhaps the stalker Brandon mentioned had found us because of this.
Sally stayed until the afternoon, but Tiffany refused to leave, insisting on staying with me.
I had promised to spend time with her, so I let her stay. Besides, she was well-behaved and not mischievous. Her presence added a new liveliness to the estate.
When Lisa arrived, Tiffany stood at the door and adorably greeted her. "Welcome!"
Lisa joked, "Wow, where'd you pop up from, little miss? Doesn't your boss know it violates labor laws to hire kids?"
Tiffany, though young, had picked up some business phrases from Sally. She replied, "I don't get paid, Madam Pretty."
Lisa bent down and gently tapped Tiffany's nose. "What did you call me?"
"Madam Pretty," Tiffany replied.
Lisa pointed to me, sitting in a rocking chair. "What do you call her?"
"Madeline."
Lisa's eyes brimmed with deep hurt as if she'd endured a thousand blows. She pinched Tiffany's cheek in response. "I'm younger than her and don't have a big belly. I should be called by my name, Lisa, not Madam."
Tiffany looked at me and then at her. "You look like a madam. But if you don't like it, I can call you Lisa."
