"Here!" I yelled to Jane, making a sharp turn into another corner.
Jane sounded confused as she spoke. "But she's—"
"We'll cut her off before she escapes into the forest." I said, my breath coming out in pants as we raced through the stores in order to catch up with her.
As soon as we burst through an open door, Ashley skidded to a stop. Her eyes narrowed once they settled on me.
"Well, well, well," She started, a cautious look in her eyes.
"Nowhere to run." I dared to take a step forward.
She turned back just as a loud yelp rang through the air. Her eyes flicked back to me and I could see the impatience in them.
"Get the hell out of my way. I'll deal with you some other time." She tried to side-step her way into an escape but Jane did well to block her path.
"Fat chance of that happening." Jane folded her arms, eyeing her cautiously.
Slowly, Thea's face contorted into that of anger. I remained rooted in the spot as she eyed me venomously.
"We didn't come here for small talk," I started. "Just tell us what Magnus is hiding, and we'll be on our merry way."
Ashley simply stared at us for a while. Suddenly, her sharp laughter cut through the air like a blade.
When she dropped her head back to look at me, there was nothing but pure hate laced in them.
"You really expect me to just sell out my mate. You really are nothing but a dumb bitch." She scoffed.
My chest slowly rose and fell as I tried to keep my anger in check. I couldn't afford to lose it. Not now when it was pretty obvious that I needed something from her. I needed answers, and she was just the right person to get it from.
"Tell us." Jane said eagerly, taking a cautious step forward.
Ashley eyed her with disdain before turning back to me. "You really think coming here with some wannabe would be enough to intimidate me? Fat chance."
I could see her shoulders shaking with each word I uttered. Good. That was exactly what I wanted.
"Oh wait wait." I piped up, my tone filled with mockery. "Does he give you the occasional fuck or two? Maybe tells you how you're the most beautiful woman he's ever seen?"
I shook my head. "Ashley, you poor darling."
Her eyes looked borderline bloodshot as her fists tightened by her side. "You should be fucking dead. I'll snuff the life out of you myself if I have to."
"And how do you want to do that?" I asked, my tone filled with mockery.
"The one thing that was meant to kill you. Rumoured to be a poisonous Death Grass. Once you were gone, Magnus would inherit every single one of your property." Ashley had a maniacal smile on her face.
My ears rang as I watched her. She was really a lunatic. All this time, they'd been planning on ending my life and taking all that I'd worked so hard for.
Magnus's intentions had never been pure, and yeah, he might have been betrayed me along the run. But to think he'd been trying to kill me this whole time?
