My hand went to a specific spot on my chest. That day when I'd had that fight with Ashley, I was just a single contact away from being seriously injured.
Thank the goddess for the potion that eventually saved me. I would have died and it would have probably been too late to do anything.
"You cunt!"
Jane had punched Ashley hard before I could even react. Ashley dropped to the ground with the grace of an elephant, groaning and screaming obscenities at us.
Jane ignored her and continued to speak. "Haven't you seen the news? Do you know who you tried to kill? Thea is the Alpha Princess of the Blackwood Family."
"Like I give a fuck." Ashley coughed out before cackling out. If she looked crazy before, she was now borderline insane.
"Even if you're the Alpha king's princess, I don't care. When you're dead, you'll be nothing but a pile of rotting flesh. Who's going to save you then? Your lovely brothers?"
Blood rushed to my ears as all I could focus on was the anger that raged within me. I tightened my hands into fists, willing myself to transform. In my head, I could already see myself striking Ashley down.
Nothing.
By the look in her eyes, she must have realized it too. She began to clap her hands while laughing in that ever mocking voice.
"You can't even transform." She cackled. "How pathetic can you be?"
I bit my lip, unable to control my anger anymore. Ashley was in my line of sight and a good backhand would put her down quick enough.
"Ashley."
My hand froze just as I raised it. Even now, that voice still had a way of sending a chill down my spine.
I turned to see Magnus watching us. His gaze flicked to Ashley who was sitting on the ground and then to me.
"You dare lay your hands on my mate?" His eyes narrowed on me, glaring with nothing but hate in them.
I barely got in a word as he shifted into his wolf form and began running straight for me. I tried backing away but Magnus only increased his speed, onyx eyes locked on my figure.
Oh no. There was no way I'd make it out in time.
Haelor let out a breath before fixing a cold look at Magnus. "You really are the worst of scum, aren't you?"
Magnus, in his wolf form, cocked his head to the side, his eyes gleaming with nothing but predatory malice.
Haelor wasn't the slightest bit moved by this as he tightened his grip on the firearm. It wouldn't take much out of him to pull the trigger.
"Not only did you betray Thea, but you tried to attack her too?" Haelor took a small step forward, eyes carefully trained on Magnus's form.
"Go to hell!" Magnus shot back. "I did what I did and so what? She deserved to die."
Haelor's eyes narrowed on the wolf. "You think I'd let you hurt her? The day you even try to touch a single hair on her head is the day you'll be taking your last breath."
I couldn't but stare in awe at Haelor's unmoving figure. He had his back to me and his stance was firm as he regarded Magnus.
This was Haelor swearing to protect me from anything that Magnus would try to do or any of his schemes.
I watched as he clenched and unclenched his jaw, his fingers tightly wound around the firearm. I didn't think it was possible for him to look more handsome than he normally did and yet he seemed to prove me wrong every time.
