Now watching him, he looked very different from his thing years. Back then, when we were still so young, he hadn't been the tallest of the group. Or the strongest, not even the sweetest.
I had never really given much of a second thought when it came to him. In a way, I had always overlooked him.
Things went from better to worse when Magnus had come with his proposition. Haelor had been away with the army at the borders of the kingdom.
That was the moment when Magnus and I grew closer. I'd been to blinded by his sweet behaviour and he manipulated me into believing marrying him would be for the better.
It had been quite a while since we got to actually speak with each other yet, here he was, standing before me in a bid to protect me. Just like when we'd been young, he was here to stand by me now that I was in danger.
It was hard to ignore the warm feeling that bloomed in my chest the more I watched his figure. I felt a swell of pride in me knowing that I had someone like him by my side.
A low growl from Magnus broke my line of thoughts and I turned to him. Magnus looked like he was ready to lunge at anymore, his eyes gleaming dangerously.
"Thea, stay back." Haelor held out a hand to guard me.
In a split second, Magnus had already lunged towards us. Haelor managed to move me away just in time to block the attack from Magnus.
The firearm flew out of his hands but it didn't mean he had lost his form. He aimed a low punch to Magnus's gut and that sent him flying.
Wiping a sheet of sweat off his forehead, he stretched his hands out. In a flash, his hand had morphed into wolf claws, sharp and with a glinting edge to them.
Never one to back down, Magnus took that as his sign to attack again, aiming for Haelor's shoulder this time around.
The general ducked from the attack, swiping at Magnus's side with his claws. They continued like this, both of them parrying and blocking the other's attacks. It was obvious who was more trained between them.
When it came to fighting, Haelor made it look so easy with how effortlessly he fought back. He attacked with the grace of a leopard, swift and calculated in his attacks.
"Just die!" Magnus growled angrily, too enraged to think his attacks through.
Just as he snarled at Haelor's throat, the general clamped a tight hand over his throat and slammed him hard against the ground.
The crunching sound of bone cracking sent a shiver down my spine. Magnus's body was no longer moving.
She reached into her pocket and took out a small knife. In a flash, she started running for me, the knife raised to stab me.
I was a fraction to slow as she had already closed the distance between us. I closed my eyes, bracing myself for the pain, but it never came.
When my eyes opened, Haelor was standing in front of me. The knife was embedded in his side as he blocked Ashley from getting closer to me.
"Get away from me!" She tried to shake out of his iron grip all to no avail. "I'll kill you. I'll kill all of you goddamit!"
She opened her mouth to say something else but Jane was quicker, hitting her hard across the back of the head. Ashley crumpled unceremoniously to the ground, her body hitting the floor with a thud.
"Haelor."
I called out his name, blood rushing to my ears as I laid eyes on the wound. I reached a hand to touch it, dread pooling in my gut as I looked at my blood stained hands.
"Come on, Thea." Haelor had a small smile on his face, his face a bright red. "I'm fine. It's just a little wound. Nothing more."
