As Penelope walked down the stairs and caught sight of Nora in her exquisite bridal look, her steps faltered.
For a split second, she looked entirely rattled, as if she had just seen the ghost of someone else entirely...
"Mom?" Nora called out softly, noticing Penelope frozen on the steps.
Penelope snapped out of it and forced a hollow laugh. "Alright, it's time. We need to head to the hotel."
...
The venue was the Peninsula Hotel, the most luxurious establishment in San Francisco, and the Lancaster family had rented out the entire ballroom floor.
The lobby was completely cleared of outsiders. Dozens of men in black suits flanked the entrance, earpieces secured as they scanned the perimeter with hawk-like vigilance.
In the photo area, a waterfall of fresh flowers cascaded from the ceiling—a breathtaking display of opulence that filled the air with a sweet, delicate fragrance.
The moment Nora's car glided to a stop, the door was pulled open.
She instinctively looked up and instantly locked eyes with a pair of dark, smiling irises.
Hudson stood outside the car, impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit and a crisp white shirt. His bowtie was flawlessly arranged, making his sharp, stoic features look even more arresting.
"Why are you waiting out here?"
Nora's mind flashed back to her heated dream from the night before, and seeing the real man standing before her made her ears flush an involuntary crimson.
He took her hand, his voice a low rumble. "I missed you."
"...Be serious."
Hudson's lips curved upward. He didn't push the joke, gently leading her toward the grand ballroom.
Grant Hamilton was leaning against a pillar nearby, smoking a cigarette. He was dressed in an obnoxiously flashy burgundy suit, his eyes crinkling in amusement. Seeing them approach, he crushed his cigarette in the nearest ashtray and sauntered over with a grin.
"Nora is looking absolutely gorgeous today, like an angel descended from heaven. You're a lucky man, Hudson. Try not to exhaust yourself tonight..."
Hudson shot him a sidelong glance.
There was no anger in his eyes, just a flat, emotionless stare that sent a shiver straight down Grant's spine. Grant immediately threw his hands up in surrender.
"My bad, I'll shut up."
