Hudson's voice remained flat, but his predatory gaze pinned Henry to his seat. "If you don't have a guilty conscience, why are you terrified of facing Alastair?"
"I..." Henry swallowed hard, a flush creeping up his neck.
He suddenly pointed an accusing finger at Hudson, his voice rising sharply. "Are you really one to talk? Have you told Evie the truth? Have you told her that the poison has reached your vital organs and you have less than two months to live? Does keeping that from her mean you have a guilty conscience too?!"
The words dropped like a bomb, plunging the study into a suffocating silence.
A loud ringing filled Nora's ears. Her mind went completely blank, as if all her senses had been violently short-circuited.
She slowly turned her head to look at Hudson.
He sat rigidly in the chair beside her. Under the study's warm lighting, his sharp jawline was locked in tension, his lips pressed into a thin line, and his dark gaze swirled with an emotion she couldn't decipher.
"Hudson," she whispered, her voice fragile. "Is... is what he said true?"
Hudson lowered his eyes for a long moment before finally looking at her, a faint, humorless curve touching his lips. "...Nora."
He didn't deny it.
A wave of suffocating despair crashed over Nora. Her breath hitched in her throat, and hot tears spilled over her lashes.
Watching her silent tears, Hudson felt as if his chest had been ripped open.
He shot a glacial glare at Henry, his eyes practically freezing the air around them. "I will handle my own condition with Nora. I don't need your interference. But what about you? Who are you planning to confess your sins to?"
Henry's face hardened. "What do you mean?"
Hudson scoffed. "Do you know the truth behind Nora and Eliza's disappearance back then? Or should I say..."
He paused, his tone turning lethal. "Were you involved?"
"What the hell are you talking about?!" Henry slammed his hand on the desk and shot to his feet, his face purple with rage. "You're sprouting absolute nonsense! Eliza was my wife, and Evie is my daughter. How could I ever..."
He trembled with fury, his voice pitching higher. "Hudson, you better have proof before you make those kinds of accusations!"
Hudson looked up at him with dark, unforgiving eyes. "Then tell me, who tipped you off about my poisoning?"
Henry's lips quivered, as if someone had just choked the words right out of his throat.
The study fell deathly silent for several seconds.
"Was it River? Or maybe my dear Uncle Arthur?"
Hudson spoke with deliberate slowness, entirely devoid of emotion. "Did they reach out to you?"
Henry's face drained of color, then flushed hotly, looking completely exposed. He opened his mouth but ultimately failed to deny it.
Taking in his reaction, Hudson offered a faint, icy smile that never reached his eyes. "My dearest father-in-law. We will settle this debt later."
With that, he took a deep breath and firmly grasped Nora's hand.
