The news of Hudson's sudden deterioration and imminent death spread rapidly.
Jude Winslow and Finnian Fairchild rushed to Skystone Manor the moment they heard. As soon as they walked in, a pungent medicinal stench hit them, so thick it was almost suffocating.
Both men frowned, their gazes dropping to a white porcelain bowl on the coffee table, stained with dark brown herbal residue.
"Where's Hudson?"
Arthur, guarding the entrance, pointed upstairs. "Mr. Lancaster is in his bedroom."
Jude and Finnian exchanged a glance before heading up the stairs.
The bedroom door was left ajar, but Jude still knocked. Nora, who had been sitting by the bed, quickly stood up. "Finnian... Mr. Winslow, what brings you here?"
Finnian scowled as he looked at the man propped up against the headboard. A strange, unspeakable sense of unease twisted in his chest.
The Hudson he knew was arrogant, aloof, and utterly untouchable. But now...
Although his complexion wasn't drastically different, that signature aura of relaxed dominance was gone, replaced by a sickly, fragile demeanor.
Truth be told, Finnian wasn't particularly close to Hudson. Their interactions over the past year had mostly been adversarial.
But this man was Evangeline's husband. His legitimate brother-in-law.
Evangeline had suffered out in the world for over twenty years. She had finally returned to her rightful family and found a man who cherished her to the bone. If something happened to Hudson...
What would Evangeline do?
"Why the sudden flare-up?"
Jude spoke first. "Is it because of the Ivory Pill..."
"No," Hudson interrupted hoarsely.
Jude pressed his lips together, clearly not buying it. "I'm sorry. We failed to keep it secure, and that's how the inside job succeeded..."
