Luis parked the car, then took my hand and led me out. He guided me into the glass elevator.

Together, we rose higher and higher until we reached the very top floor.

When the doors slid open, my breath caught at the shocking scene.

Above us stretched a dazzling night sky, lit with stars and bursts of fireworks. It looked like diamonds scattered across black velvet.

The rooftop had been decorated warmly, with balloons and bright red roses forming a private viewing deck.

It was just the two of us.

Luis pulled out a medical kit from who–knows–where and crouched in front of me.

He dipped a cotton swab into antiseptic, then gently held my chin as he dabbed the swollen corner of my mouth.

The sting hit instantly when the liquid touched the split skin.

I sucked in a sharp breath and turned my head away. “It hurts … ” I whimpered.

His brows pulled together, his tone sharp. “Now you know it hurts? Why didn’t you dodge when he hit you?”

But even as he scolded me, his touch became softer, almost tender.

I sulked, pressing my lips together.

How could I have known Desmond would slap me without warning?

Even if I yelled or fought back, it wouldn’t matter.

How could an Omega ever stand against a strong male Beta?

Desmond was reckless and hot–tempered.

“Train?” I looked up at him, curious. “After that, will I be able to take down two guys at once?”

He pulled a strained smile. “What, I just played the hero and saved you, and now you’re already planning to get rid of me?”

I shook my head quickly.

My mind flashed back to how easily he had lifted Desmond earlier.

His forearm had been tight with muscle, every line smooth and powerful. His presence as a pure–blood Alpha had frozen the air around us.

It was violent, yes.

But in that moment, I thought he looked unbelievably handsome.

And for the first time, I understood just how massive the gap in the strength of the bloodline really was.

It was overwhelming. The difference was as stark as day and night.

If I had even half of his skill, I could have taught Desmond a lesson myself.

Luis carefully cleaned the cut at the corner of my mouth, then the scrape on my elbow. When he finished, he leaned back on the lounge chair beside me.

One hand propped under his head while the other lazily toyed with my fingers.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed.

Luis gave me a quick look, then answered right in front of me.

“What is it?”

On the other end, a woman’s voice came through. Calm but firm.

“I heard from the servant that you didn’t even stop by your house to get some rest after landing. What was so urgent?”

Luis had told me his trip would take a week.

But it had only been four days. Counting the long flights, plus all the business he had to handle, that meant he hadn’t slept much at all.

I studied him more carefully.

His profile was sharp, his eyes deep–set, and his nose straight. But faint shadows lingered under his eyes. The mark of too many sleepless nights.

He had rushed back just to celebrate my birthday.

The thought made my chest swell. My eyes burned, and my throat tightened. The tears were overwhelming my eyes, so much so that they almost spilled over.

When Luis hung up, I quickly turned my head so he wouldn’t notice.

After a moment, I whispered, my voice rough, “Thank you for tonight.”

Thank you for protecting me without hesitation.

Thank you for standing on my side.

Thank you for the fireworks.

Thank you for everything.

I had always been someone who was easy to move.

There wasn’t a hint of hesitation. I slid my arms around his neck and leaned closer. My lips brushed his thick brow. Then the bridge of his nose. One kiss after another.

Finally, I pressed a soft kiss to his cool, thin lips.

Luis let out a rough breath, the sound loud in the dark night.

I started to pull back-

But his hand caught the back of my head, holding me close as his mouth claimed mine.

The kiss grew deeper. Urgent, almost fierce, yet laced with careful tenderness. He stole my breath piece by piece until I could only surrender.
