Chapter 364 A Battle of Words
Third–person POV:
Carey looked at Jennifer’s face, now red and swollen, and felt a pang of heartache.
Jennifer was the daughter of his eldest son, but his son had fallen ill and passed away when Jennifer was still young, leaving Jennifer and her mother alone.
Because of that, Carey had always doted on her more than anyone else.
Anger flickered in Carey’s eyes as he struck his cane against the floor repeatedly, each thud echoing through the room. A faint pressure, the kind unique to an aging Alpha King, began to emanate from him.
“What exactly happened to Jenni’s face?”
The crowd shot gleeful glances at Deanna.
Though none of them had dared to make a move themselves, they were more than happy to watch Deanna get put in her place.
After all, the title of future Luna of Mooncrown Pack was something that invited envy, especially since Deanna wasn’t even of noble birth. What made her so lucky?
Deanna stood calmly amidst all the hostile stares and spoke evenly. “I’m the one who slapped Jennifer.”
Carey frowned. “You? How could this happen?”
Deanna’s demeanor remained composed and dignified. “It’s like this, Mr. Barkley. Jennifer made up lies, calling me, the future Luna of Mooncrown Pack, a homewrecker. She also insulted the bloodline of Mooncrown Pack.
“I figured Jennifer was young and doesn’t know any better, and that her elders certainly didn’t put her up to this. So I took it upon myself to discipline her on your behalf with two slaps, to save Bluestone Pack’s reputation from being ruined by her careless words.”
Hearing this, Carey’s expression grew
strained.
If he chose to defend Jennifer now, he might as well be admitting that Bluestone Pack had encouraged a child to insult the Luna of Mooncrown Pack.
In werewolf society, that could easily be seen as direct provocation against an Alpha- grounds enough to spark a pack war!

Carey’s voice dropped low. “Jenni, how could you be so disrespectful to Ms. Wiley?”
Jennifer bit her lip. “Grandpa! Why are you taking an outsider’s side?”

Carey patted her hand. “Enough! Enough. It was all a misunderstanding. You shouldn’t have joked around like that, and Deanna shouldn’t have resorted to hitting. Let’s just leave it at
that.”
Carey’s words were slick and calculated.
This was clearly Jennifer’s fault, yet he’d spun it as Jennifer merely joking around while Deanna was the one who resorted to violence.
If someone with ill intentions spread this story, Deanna would gain a reputation as a crude and violent future Luna of Mooncrown Pack.
Just then, Jennifer’s mother, Victoria Broo, walked over. Seeing her daughter’s face swollen like this, she was both heartbroken and furious.
She had no intention of letting this go so easily.
“Carey, Jennifer is still young and doesn’t know any better. She was just making a careless joke. A few words of scolding would have been enough.
“I’ve never even raised my voice at her since she was little, and now look at her face. Seeing her hurt like this breaks my heart!”
Victoria turned and shot Deanna a venomous glare before quickly smoothing her expression back into one of gentle composure.
“Ms. Wiley, you haven’t even officially become the Luna of Mooncrown Pack yet, and you’re already this brutish and ill–mannered. Once you marry in, you’ll be representing Mooncrown Pack’s image. You assaulted your host at a Bluestone Pack event. Where does that leave us? How is that any different from some Rogue? And frankly, taking a step back, was Jennifer even wrong about you?”
Victoria’s words were measured and razor–sharp delivering blow after blow without ever raising a hand.
She implied that Deanna was unworthy of the title of Luna of Mooncrown Pack.
She painted Deanna as a crude, ill–mannered she–werewolf who had no place in polite society.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd.
Someone took the lead and spoke up.
