I sat on the edge of my bed, staring into the shadows cast by the dim light spilling through the curtains.

My fingers dug into the sheets, twisting the fabric, and I could feel my pulse hammering in my ears.

Every muscle in my body was tense, as if I were bracing for something I didn’t want to happen but couldn’t avoid. A cold emptiness settled over me, heavier than grief, heavier than fear. Frustration boiled beneath it, raw and untamed.

I had tried something reckless. Foolish. Desperate.

I had tried to mindlink Alpha Ethan.

The thought made my cheeks burn, even now. I had hoped stupidly, irrationally that somehow he would answer me, that somehow he would step out from the grave and give me a sign. A single word, a whisperanything.

But the dead do not answer.

And I had nothing.

I leaned back against the headboard, my eyes closing. My mind wandered to the necklace I wore, a small silver locket that had survived every tragedy I had faced. Trembling fingers fumbled with it, opening the clasp. Inside, the photograph stared back at me.

My mate. My children. My world.

I traced their faces with my thumb, feeling the familiar ache in my chest, a pain so deep it made it hard to breathe. My son’s mischievous grin, my daughter’s small scrunch of her nose when she laughed, my mate’s calm strength.. all gone.

And yet, it wasn’t the past I feared. It was the future the monster who had taken everything, who now claimed he had a right to me.

His words echoed in my mind, jagged and cruel:

If you don’t want to be mine the easy wayyou’ll do it the hard way.

I pressed the locket to my chest, my lips trembling.

I would rather die than belong to him,I whispered to myself. I will never, ever be his.”

The door slammed open before I could even think, and my body jerked instinctively. My heart raced, and my wolf stirred uneasily within me. It was only Edna, but the sight of her brought no comfort, only more tension.

I’m sorry, she gasped, hurrying to my side. I forgot to knock. I had to tell you something

Edna’s hand gripped mine. Should I come?

:.

No,I said, forcing courage into my voice. I’m not a child.

Walking down the hall felt like walking toward death. My legs trembled with every step, even as I tried to tell myself I was strong. I was ready.

I entered his room without knocking. He was there, lounging on the bed, phone in hand. His dark eyes lifted to mine, unreadable, dangerous.

You called for me.” I said.

Yes.

Why?

That’s not how you speak to your master,he said, smirking.

You are not my master,I spat.

His laugh was low, predatory. He stepped closer. My back hit the wall instinctively.

Don’t touch me.” I warned.

He reached for my waist. I slapped him.

He staggered slightly, shock flashing in his eyes. You… slapped me.

I’ll do it again.

Anger bloomed in his dark gaze. He grabbed me and shoved me onto the bed, towering over me. My heart raced, my wolf snarling inside me. I couldn’t wouldn’t be prey.

My hand found the bedside table. Fingers brushed cold glass.

The boule was heavy. My pulse screamed in my ears. I swung with everything I had: grief, rage, pain, fury.

The bottle smashed against his head.

He fell back. His body hit the cold floor with a harsh thud. Blood spread across the tiles. Silence followed.

I shook, my chest rising and falling rapidly. My hands were trembling uncontrollably.

For the first time since the massacre, I had fought back.

And nothing would ever be the same again.
