The maid led me down the quiet corridor, her steps soft against the stone floor, as though even the walls were listening.

My body ached with every movement, each breath a reminder of the bruises blooming beneath my skin. When we reached my room, she gently helped me sit on the edge of the bed and brought out a bowl of warm water and clean cloths.

“Hold still,” she murmured.

I hissed when the cloth brushed against the wound on my shoulder, my fingers digging into the mattress as pain shot through me.

“I’m sorry,” she said quickly, her voice tight with sympathy. “It’s deep.”

I nodded, swallowing hard. Pain was nothing new to me. It had become a companion unwanted, constant, impossible to ignore.

As she worked, my mind drifted back to the image that had refused to leave me since earlier.

The woman.

The way she stood beside the Rough King, her hand resting possessively on his arm, her expression calm and confident, like someone who already owned everything in the room, including him.

“Who was that lady?” I asked suddenly, my voice breaking the heavy silence.

The maid’s hands froze.

She didn’t look at me. Instead, she dipped the cloth back into the water and wrung it out slowly, as if buying time.

“I’m not in the right place to discuss the affairs of the Rough King,” she finally said.

“I just want to know,” I pressed gently. “That’s all.”

She glanced at me then, her eyes sharp and assessing. A faint, knowing smile tugged at her lips.

“So you want to check if you have a chance with him?” she asked.

I stiffened, the pain forgotten for a brief moment.

“No, hell no,” I snapped. “I’m not interested in your Alpha. I can never be. I don’t want him, and I never will.”

Her smile faded.

“Fine,” she said after a pause. “Since you insist.”

She leaned closer, lowering her voice. “Her name is Lady Sabrina,”

The name settled heavily in my chest.

“She has been warming the Alpha’s bed since his mate, Luna, died.”

My heart skipped, then sank.

That explained the familiarity. The confidence. The way she looked at him like she belonged there.

“All thanks to you.”

I swallowed.

“And now,” the maid continued, her voice grim, “she hates you.”

A chill crawled down my spine.

“When Lady Sabrina hates someone,” she went on, “she makes sure they suffer. She comes from a very rich and powerful family. There is nothing you can do to her. Nothing.”

The words felt like a death sentence.

“You will have to endure,” the maid said softly. “And pray to the Moon Goddess to deliver you from her hands.”

I nodded slowly.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

She finished bandaging me and stood, giving me a final look that held both pity and warning before leaving the room.

The door closed behind her with a soft click.

I exhaled shakily and leaned back against the bed, staring at the ceiling.

At least Sabrina’s attack had done me one favor.

I wouldn’t be locked in the dungeon anymore.

Night came too quickly.

Sleep refused to claim me, my thoughts racing as shadows stretched across the walls. Every sound made me tense–the distant footsteps of guards, the crackle of torches, and the wind howling outside like a restless spirit.

I kept seeing Sabrina’s face.

The doors opened suddenly.

Sabrina laughed lightly and stepped closer to me, circling like a predator.

“Nothing?” she repeated. “Nothing doesn’t leave scars like this.”

Her fingers brushed my bandage.

I flinched.

“Don’t touch me.” I snapped.

Her smile vanished.

In a heartbeat, her hand struck my face.

The sound echoed through the room.
