Chapter 399
Alpha Ethan’s POV
Breakfast with Reven and the children should have been peaceful.
It should have felt like a small step toward normal, a fragile imitation of the family we once were.

The kids were cheerful, chattering nonstop, their excitement over having her back shining in their eyes like sunlight after a
storm.
But nothing about the morning felt peaceful.
Because Reven barely looked at me.
She spoke to the children, smiled for them, helped cut their food, wiped syrup from Lyra’s cheek, and laughed softly when Lucian made a joke all the things a mother should do.
All the things my mate used to do.
But when it came to me…
Nothing.
Not a glance. Not a word unless absolutely necessary.
It was like I didn’t exist.
Or worse – like I was something she couldn’t bear to look at.
The moment breakfast ended, I had been summoned.
The Council.
Of course.
They had waited long enough.
The council chamber was cold, cavernous, built of dark stone that swallowed sound and warmth alike. High–backed chairs formed a semicircle around a long table, each occupied by an Alpha or elder whose authority shaped the fate of entire packs.
All eyes turned to me as I entered.
Judgment. Curiosity. Suspicion.
“Alpha Ethan,” the head elder said. “You took your time.”
“I came as soon as I was available.”
“We hear your mate has returned.”
The words felt loaded, heavy with implications.
“I am still investigating,” I said evenly.

Chapter 399
Murmurs rippled through the room.
“How long will that investigation take?” another Alpha askal sharply. “The park needs clarity. Is she your Lane..or an imposter?”
My jaw tightened.
“It is not that simple.”
“Nothing about this situation is simple,” the elder replied. “But we require answers. If she is not your true mate, she cannot occupy the Luna position.”
“She isn’t occupying anything.” I said flatly. “She remembers nothing”
That silenced the room for a moment.
“Convenient,” one Alpha muttered.
My eyes snapped to him. “Careful.”
The temperature in the chamber dropped several degrees.
The elder raised a hand. “Enough. Alpha Ethan, you must determine the truth quickly. Your pack cannot remain leaderless in matters concerning the Luna.”
“I said I would,” I replied, forcing my voice into calm neutrality. “And I will.”
After that, the meeting shifted to pack matters, border disputes, supply routes, rogue activity, and trade negotiations. Normally I would have been fully engaged, weighing every decision carefully.
Today, my mind kept drifting.
To Reven’s blank eyes.
To the way she flinched from me.
To the possibility that she wasn’t pretending at all.
By the time the meeting ended, my patience was gone.
Back in the car, I pulled out my phone and dialed the private investigator I had assigned to her case weeks ago.
He answered immediately.
“Alpha.”
“What do you have for me?”
A pause.
“Not much, sir.”
My grip tightened on the phone. “Explain.”
“I couldn’t find any official records matching her identity beyond recent employment history. It’s like she appeared out of nowhere. However… I did hear something.”

He glanced at the address and nodded. “Yes, Alpha
The drive took over an hour.
Far from pack territory. Far from anywhere important.
Suspiciously far.
The hospital itself was small, older, and quiet, the kind of place people went when they couldn’t afford better or didn’t want
I stepped inside.
The receptionist stiffened instantly. “How can I help you, sir?”
“I need to speak with a doctor regarding a former patient.”
She pointed down the hall with trembling fingers.
Alinutes later, I was standing in a cramped office across from a middle–aged doctor who looked like he regretted every decision that had led him to this moment.
“I’m here about a woman named Reven,” I said, placing her photo on his desk.
He glanced at it, then shook his head, “I’m sorry. I wasn’t the one who handled her case.”
“Who was?”
“Doctor Halden. But… he passed away last year.”
The words hit like a brick.
“So you know nothing about her condition?”
“Nothing firsthand.”
“Shit.”

Ite healtuned. “There is a case file. It doesn’t say much, though”
“The it to me.”
He stiffened. “I’m afraid I can’t release a patient’s file without proper authorization.”
I leaned forward slowly.
“She’s my wife”
1 pulled out my phone and showed him photos of Reven beside me, with the children, public appearances from before her disappearance.
Recognition dawned in his eyes
“Even so
“If you don’t cooperate,” I said quietly, “I will shut this hospital down before sunset. You should know exactly who I am.”
Fear drained the color from his face

I didn’t thank him.

Before going to the apartment. I stopped at the club listed as her workplace.
“She’s not on shift today, the manager said nervously.
Of course she wasn’t
So I went to her home.
I knocked once.
From inside, a female voice called, “I’m coming!”
The door opened.
Shock flooded her face the instant she saw me.
Good
“May I come in?” I asked pleasantly.
She tried to slam the door shut.
1 caught it easily and pushed inside, the guards following behind me.
The apartment was small. Modest. Lived–in..
And filled with Reven’s scent.
Fresh.
Strong
She had been here recently.
I sat down on a narrow chair, gesturing for Edna to do the same.
She didn’t sit.
She stood there shaking like someone who had seen a ghost.
“I’m Alpha Ethan,” I said calmly. “I just want to ask a few questions. Be honest, and this will go smoothly.”
“How is Reven?” she blurted. “What did you do to her? Where is she?”
“She’s fine,” I said. “Now answer my questions if you want to stay alive.”
