“Yes, sir!” George replied at once. He immediately understood Merrick’s plan and his earlier anger faded.

They had ordered 50,000 units of the nanotreatment metal in total, worth five billion coins. They hadn’t paid in full upfront. A balance of 2.5 billion coins was due once they’d tested the product and confirmed it was safe.

George sent the message to the Grayson family’s liaison right away.

“The soldiers are responding very well to this product. We urgently need 100,000 more units of nanotreatment metal delivered to Wasteland City at once. A small taint surge has broken out here, and we’re in desperate need. We’ll settle payment for the previous balance and this new order together upon delivery in Wasteland City.”

The Grayson beastman quickly reported this to the family head, Leo Grayson.

“Black Rick, huh?” Leo muttered, reclining comfortably on his lavish golden bed, his large, heavy body resting on the cushions. A graceful woman sat beside him, gently feeding him grapes. “Everyone says he’s full of tricks, but it seems he’s not that clever after all.”

“Sir, should we still sell to them?” his subordinate asked.

“Sell? Of course we sell!” Leo said, savoring a juicy grape. “Tell him to put down a one-billion coin deposit first.”

That b’stard Black Rick will never taste grapes this good in his life.

His broad, fleshy face turned toward the woman next to him. She mechanically removed her cloak, revealing very skimpy clothing underneath. The subordinate didn’t dare look, bowing his head low.

“Sir, they insist on paying only in Wasteland City,” the subordinate warned, worried it might be a trap.

“I was planning to go to Wasteland City anyway-just not yet. In about a month,” Leo said, a cruel glint in his eyes. “Everything the 9th Legion took from me, I’ll get back with interest.”

Some nobody had ruined his youngest son, and the 9th Legion was protecting her? He would add that debt as

well.

In less than a month, Wasteland City would belong to the Grayson family.

Leo’s hand dug roughly into the woman’s flesh. She endured the pain in silence, not daring to make a sound.

The subordinate quickly backed away, not wanting to disturb Leo’s pleasure.

After Leo finished, a servant dragged the nearly unconscious cleric away.

After resting for a moment, Leo opened his wrist terminal and sent an encrypted message on the StarNet.

“Everything is going as planned.”

It only showed “read” on the screen, with no reply. But Leo knew they were pleased.

George reported everything to Merrick at once.

He was just about to praise Gillian for her discovery when Merrick’s cold, sharp voice came through.

“Good. Handle everything until I return. I remember there’s a blackstone in the legion vault, about the size of a child’s fist. Give it to Ms. Sterling as a reward for uncovering this problem.”

George thought he was being generous.

A blackstone that size would sell for at least five hundred thousand coins at auction. And Merrick just gave it away without a second thought.

“Understood. I’ll get it right away!”

By the time Freya came to find Gillian, she and Mabel were already packed, waiting politely in the common area.

Most clerics sent to support Wasteland City were spoiled and hard to deal with. None were as thoughtful and polite as Gillian.

“Ms. Sterling,” Freya said, pressing a small, square metal box into Gillian’s hand. “This is a private reward from the Commander. Keep it safe. You’re the one who saved us.”

Even through the metal box, Gillian could feel strong psionic power coming from inside.

It was blackstone, and a large piece at that.

“We’ll also need your help later to check the soldiers in Wasteland City who used the nanotreatment metal,” Freya added, sincerely grateful. Without Gillian, the 9th Legion would have faced a disaster.

Gillian hesitated for a moment. Is that all?

She put the metal box into her luggage, then secretly moved it into her wrist terminal storage.

“Did George pass my request to the higher-ups?” she asked casually.

She had to support Mabel and her two future children, so benefits mattered. A position in the legion meant more to her right now than a blackstone reward.

The Wilder Peak she’d bought had plenty of blackstone underground anyway.

“Don’t worry, Ms. Sterling. Your status and benefits will be upgraded,” Freya assured her, tapping her own wrist terminal. “The legion has already issued the order. You’re appointed chief medic of the medical team, in charge of half the 9th Legion’s medical corps, at the rank of captain. Report tomorrow. The StarNet notice should have arrived already.”

Almost as soon as Freya finished speaking, Gillian received the message.

“Perfect,” Gillian said with a smite..”I’ll get Grandma settled, then report tomorrow.”

Dawn was only eight or nine hours away.
