Shortly after her promotion, Gillian discovered that a previously grayed-out StarNet function on her new wrist terminal had unlocked.
She now had the authority to access the service records of all soldiers in the 9th Legion ranked major and below.
The first file she pulled up was for Freya. It showed that Freya held the rank of captain and commanded the 9th Legion’s only all-female unit, which was in charge of legion logistics and support.
In her past life, every single one of those women had died at the taint core. She would never forget their bones.
“Captain Reed,” Mabel said warmly, taking Freya’s hand with a gentle expression. “We’re having a housewarming party. We’d be honored if you’d join us for dinner.”
“I’ll be there, Mabel,” Freya replied, finding she couldn’t refuse.
She decided she would bring some food herself. It had been a long time since she had met someone she clicked with so easily, and her presence would also show others that Gillian had people on her side.
The shuttle shuddered violently as it passed through Wasteland City’s protective barrier. Powerful winds swept aside the turbulent black clouds.
Seated in the main cabin, Gillian felt a weight lift from her chest. No outsider ships could pass through the barrier, only legion vessels.
If she could help keep the 9th Legion safe, she and Mabel could live out their days here in peace.
The shuttle landed smoothly. Gillian held Mabel’s hand and followed Freya out, stepping into the infamous Wasteland City.
As soon as she disembarked, Freya sent George a message. “Housewarming at Gillian’s tomorrow. You coming?”
George sent, “I’ll be there. I’ll bring some ingredients.”
Freya replied, “Thanks, sir!”

Gillian stepped out of the long metallic corridor and immediately spotted a figure waiting at the exit.
Is that the idiot who was staring at me?
His eyes lit up when he saw me. Was he waiting here just for me?
“Gillian, right? I need to talk to you,” Tristan said, walking over and confirming her suspicion.
“Major Lawson?” Freya thought with an inward groan upon seeing him. This troublemaker.
Seeing Freya standing protectively nearby, Tristan only gave a curt nod, his focus entirely on Gillian.

“Alone. I don’t bite,” Tristan said, taking a few steps to the side. “I assume you don’t want everyone to know about this.”
She’s good at pretending.
“Major Lawson, Gillian-” Freya began, trying to intervene.
Tristan’s voice turned cold. “Captain Reed, please watch over the elder. I’m borrowing Gillian for five minutes.”
Rank had its privileges. Freya had no choice. “Yes, sir.”
Gillian squeezed Mabel’s hand reassuringly and quickly tried to pull up Tristan’s information on her wrist terminal. Unfortunately, her new clearance didn’t cover him.
What kind of big shot is Tristan?
She walked over to him. As soon as she was within earshot, he spoke, “Name your price. How many coins do you
want for that wrist terminal?”
Tristan frowned, his gaze fixed sharply on the device on Gillian’s wrist. This woman better not be difficult.
Gillian almost laughed. So he’s after my wrist terminal?
“One trillion,” she said flatly.
“You want one trillion coins for an S-class wrist terminal?” Tristan replied, his tone making it clear he knew she was joking.
“Can’t afford it?” Gillian said lightly. “Then you’ll just have to stick with a normal one.”
Can’t afford it? Tristan felt like he’d just heard the most ridiculous joke of his life. He thought her demanding two hundred million coins before was already outrageous, but a trillion?

His casual expression turned sharp. “I’m not trying to cheat you. Give me the wrist terminal, and I’ll give you an A- class one instead, plus one hundred million coins as compensation.”
This time, Gillian didn’t even look at him. “How about I give you an A-class wrist terminal and a hundred million coins, and you get me another S-class one? Do we have a deal?” She wouldn’t mind getting one for Mabel, too.
“Gillian, this is an order!” Tristan snapped. He hadn’t expected her to be so sharp-tongued.
