Mábel could tell Gillian meant to leave her and Elara alone for a private talk, and she indeed had quite a few things she wanted to say to the elder sister.

“Alright then. Elara. We will head over to Gourmaw Road for a stroll tomorrow, and we will take Grandma along with us, too.”

Noticing Elara was about to turn down the plan, Gillian hinted for her to spend more quality time staying with their grandma.

Elara had originally intended to break apart every chance Gillian got to stay close to Black Rick. Yet when/ she met Mabel’s earnest gaze full of unspoken words, her heart softened instantly.

“Okay.”

Gillian walked upstairs and pushed open the bedroom door, where warm lights lit up the whole room gently.

Merrick watched the quiet girl, then closed the door firmly behind them.

In the next instant, he could no longer hold back his physical discomfort and slumped down onto the floor. He propped his hands on both sides of his body, and a light touch against his knees let him confirm his legs had already suffered severe frostbite.

“Gillian, what if I end up disabled for life? Will you still stay by my side?”

“I will, but there…”

Gillian stepped close toward him and pulled down his metal tactical trousers, exposing his legs covered in serious frostbite marks.

Her fingertips brushed lightly over the injured skin. Merrick tilted his chin upward slightly. The soft touch of her fingers mixed with the sharp stinging pain on his skin left him feeling dazed.

“You have stood side by side with Elara for six whole years. Why does she oppose the spiritual bond between you and me so fiercely?”

There was no trace of joy or sorrow in Gillian’s eyes, and it stabbed straight into Merrick’s heart.

“I suppose she thinks I have stolen the precious younger sister she cherishes more than anything else in this world.”

Stolen her away? What exactly did he do to take her from Elara?

Gillian stared at his messy and helpless look sitting on the ground, then held out her hand toward him. “Stand up.”

Merrick grasped her delicate hand, and the unease lingering in his heart faded away bit by bit. He knew there was still room for reconciliation between him and Gillian.

Gillian unleashed her psionic power to wrap around Merrick’s body, and soon guided him slowly over to

the sofa.

She crouched down and pointed lightly at his injured legs. “Elara held back her strength. She never truly meant to cripple your limbs completely.”

Merrick was filled with bitter helplessness deep inside. Elara never aimed merely at hurting his legs, she intended to ruin all the happy days Gillian was supposed to have in the future.

“Commander Cole, now it is time for us to talk properly. Tell me exactly how you stole the beloved younger sister of Elara.”

Gillian straightened up, ready to listen to his full explanation, yet she hardly held any optimistic expectations toward his words.

Merrick tapped lightly on his wrist terminal and took out a sealed metal box from its built-in storage

space.

“Gillian, all the answers you want lie right inside this box.”

Gillian took the metal box and opened it slowly.

The box was stuffed full of old photographs of herself.

The photo placed on the very top captured her on her graduation day. Dressed in a pure-white cleric uniform, she wore an extremely bright and radiant smile.

She flipped through the thick stack one after another. There were pictures of her shedding sad tears, shots of her looking tangled in troubles, and these photos covered a wide span of different ages of her life.

Gillian’s heart started beating restlessly.

Every single photograph was marked with a clear shooting date on the back, along with short personal notes Merrick had written down whenever he looked at them.

Some lines teased her childish innocence for grinning while munching on green grapes casually.

Some sentences showed his envy toward her warm daily life taken good care of by Mabel, and revealed his strong desire to taste the handmade golden silk pastries she loved so much.

There were also words expressing his worry over her slow physical growth, and thoughts of finding proper excuses to send her crates of top-grade nutritional supplements secretly.

Gillian suddenly recalled that she had once won a whole case of premium nutritional supplements in a campus lucky draw long ago. She never figured out the truth back then, yet now she finally knew all those gifts came from him.

She picked out the oldest photo placed at the bottom of the pile, which dated back to the year 6020 in the Beast Era, exactly five years before the present time.

In that picture, she had been admitted into the official Cleric Academy. Wearing neat white casual outfits,

she sat quietly on the campus grounds, full of sincere longing and expectations for her future life

“Gillian, Elara first set foot in the Wasteland City six years ago. She is outstanding and stunning, and she even risked her own life to protect me.

“Still, I suspected her arrival was nothing but a carefully laid trap arranged by forces from Capital Plarjet. I spent a whole year launching thorough investigations into her background, and that was how I accidentally found out all about you.”

Gillian flipped over the very first photograph she had seen, on which only one single line was written.

“Why does Elara care so much about this young female? Who exactly is she?”

“You have known about me for a long time?”

“I guess you could put it that way.”
