“You are even weaker than the weakest beastman under me. Yet you hold such great resolve and seem abie to overcome every trouble. Gillian, I have grown curious about you.”

Merrick’s eyes were deep. She could not help stepping back.

She could hardly accept the truth hidden deep in her heart. Merrick had kept watch over her in silence fo five full years.

Merrick felt a sharp twinge of pain upon seeing her step away.

“Gillian, are you afraid of me?”

Gillian avoided his gaze and spoke in a restless tone. “What happened with the heat powder? Elara said you possess the antidote.”

She tidied up the scattered photos and placed them back into the metal box. She then stored the box inside her wrist terminal space.

She had no intention of returning them to Merrick.

These photos belonged to her, and she alone had the right to deal with them.

Merrick knew this conversation was bound to happen sooner or later.

He did not feel troubled by this matter. As long as Gillian forgave him for those five years of surveillance, all other issues would be easy to settle.

“You have the antidote, so there was no need to form a core bond with me. Why did you lie to me?”

Gillian failed to understand why he refused to use the antidote.

“We were forced to stay bound. This situation benefits neither you nor me.”

Merrick turned sideways and struggled to stand up. Sharp pains in his legs nearly made him lose balance.

Gillian felt a surge of compassion. She took one small step toward him before stopping abruptly.

She hardened her tone to hide her concern.

“Merrick, if you keep straining your legs like this, you will end up crippled.”

“Gillian, I hate it when you stay far away from me.”

He walked over to her and reached out to touch her face.

Gillian grabbed his hand and pulled it away. “Merrick, have you had enough?”

“You are upset about my lie because you have feelings for me too, are you not?”

Merrick clasped her hand firmly. He wrapped his other arm around her waist firmly, determined to get a definite answer and refuse to back down.

“Merrick, love can never be built on lies. Perhaps our relationship was wrong from the very start.”

Gillian did not deny that she held faint affection for Merrick.

It was never shameful to have feelings for a male. What saddened her was being deceived all along.

“Gillian, I knew you cared for me as well.”

He saw the hesitation in her eyes and realized his feelings were mutual. He pulled her into his arms at

once.

He paid no heed to her struggles and whispered in her ear.

“Believe me or not, the antidote is already gone. I planned to find you on your graduation day and take you back to the 9th Legion.

“I failed to locate you then. Cleric Academy informed me that all newly graduated clerics had already been assigned elsewhere. I thought you had chosen another place to stay.

“Right at that time, Tristan arrived in Goldspine City. I went to escort him to the garrison.

“By pure chance, someone marked me as their mate. When I went to sort out the matter, I found that the person was you.”

Merrick held her tightly as if he wished to merge her into his own body. He rested his jaw on top of her head, holding her as if she were his most precious treasure.

“Gillian, you cannot imagine how relieved I was to know it was you who marked me.”

Gillian had never expected their encounter to unfold in such a way.

“You took the initiative to approach me back then. We are destined to be together.”

Merrick grew confident and looked forward to staying by her side that night.

“Who used up your antidote?”

Gillian pressed her fingers against his lips, finding the coincidence too hard to believe.

Merrick wore a bright smile and told her the truth.

“Sylas took it. After Elara left, he lost the ice ability that kept his violent nature under control. His violent genes went out of hand, and he could no longer restrain his rampage state. I gave the antidote to him right away.”

The antidote was extremely rare. It could cure the effect of heat powder and temporarily restrain genetic defects.
