George didn’t press the matter. If this was what Gillian wanted, he wouldn’t disagree. He could always help her move later if she changed her mind.

“Let me know if you need anything,” he said. “It’s late. You and your grandmother should rest. I’ll give you special permission to report to the medical team at noon tomorrow.”

Freya could see George still had things to say to Gillian, so she took Mabel inside first to tidy up the usable rooms.

“George, thank you, but I’ll go to the medical team early tomorrow,” Gillian insisted. “The taint can’t wait. The longer we delay, the worse the soldiers’ condition will be.”

“Gillian, you remind me of someone,” George said, clearly touched. “She cared for the legion’s soldiers just like you do. She was the best cleric I’ve ever known.”

Gillian is exactly what I was hoping for.

“You mean Ms. Elara Locke?” Gillian’s eyes lit up. She had heard stories about Elara and Black Rick.

“I heard she and the Commander stuck by each other through everything. They were the perfect couple here in Wasteland City, weren’t they?”

Elara was only a few years older than her, but already a level 3 cleric, highly respected in Wasteland City.

“Gillian, you shouldn’t ask about things you shouldn’t know,” George said quietly. “Ms. Locke is a forbidden topic for the Commander right now. No one is allowed to mention her.”

He leaned in slightly. “She left for the Capital Planet three months ago. She won’t be back for a long time.”

“Thank you for telling me,” Gillian said, immediately falling silent. She had just gotten too excited at the mention

of her idol.

George’s wrist terminal beeped suddenly. His expression darkened. “Gillian, there’s an emergency. I have to go.”

He didn’t even get to say goodbye to Freya before he jumped into his terrain gripper and sped away.

Watching his car disappear, Gillian’s face turned solemn. In her past life, Elara had never shown up-not even when Wasteland City fell and everyone was slaughtered by space pirates.

She had always thought Elara had died with the 9th Legion. So she had gone back to the Capital Planet.

Freya stepped out and found Gillian standing alone. She patted her shoulder. “Gillian, George left already?”

Gillian snapped out of her thoughts and gave her a grateful smile. “Yeah, he had an emergency. Freya, thank you so much for getting him today. It wouldn’t have ended so well without him.”

“Oh, it was nothing. Just a small favor,” Freya said, waving a hand. “Look, this house is spacious, but it’s costly to

The two walked inside together.

Gillian followed Freya in. The living room was bright and simply furnished. Basic metal furniture filled the space, and it looked neat enough.

“This is the main control terminal for the house, including the yard shield,” Freya explained, pointing at it. “It uses about a thumb-sized piece of blackstone a year, costing around a hundred thousand coins.”

That would take half of Gillian’s salary. That was why most people lived in the main towers–not only for safety, but to save money.

“Thank you, Freya. I’ll think it over,” Gillian answered. She could tell Freyà truly cared about her.

“You just arrived. Don’t cut corners on the shield tonight. Make sure you cover the whole yard,” Freya warned.

Gillian nodded. She had just obtained a fist-sized piece of blackstone, which would be more than enough.

After Freya left, Gillian and Mabel didn’t do anything else. Gillian turned on one layer of the shield from the control terminal, then the two of them each picked a room and fell asleep immediately.

Being young, Gillian woke up before dawn. She spent the time studying the house’s control terminal carefully. It was easy to use; as long as it had blackstone power, it ran smoothly.

She had far more privacy here than in the towers, and Mabel could learn to use it too. Since blackstone was the one thing she had plenty of, Gillian decided she would keep this house.

A vague thought lingered in her mind. Ah, well. If I can’t remember now, I’ll think of it later.

“Package delivery.”

Several alerts popped up on her wrist terminal.

Gillian went out to the yard and found all the items she’d ordered from StarNet had arrived. Adelivery drone had scanned them through the shield and dropped them in the courtyard.

This is convenient. Who says Wasteland City is a dump?
