Freya and George silently realized Gillian really knew how to hold a grudge.

Tristan glared at George. “Lt. Col. Parker, she took something that belongs to me. Don’t you think I have a right to get it back?”

“Major Lawson, the whole wrist terminal thing was just bad timing,” George said smoothly. “Besides, we have more in stock here in Wasteland City. Wait a few days, and I’ll personally bring you a new one.”

Freya had already filled George in about the wrist terminal on the way over. It wasn’t a serious issue.

Tristan didn’t want to back down. He was about to argue, but noticed the area was now crowded with 9th Legion beastmen, all staring at him.

Even the lowest-ranked among them was a lieutenant, and their looks made it obvious they’d completely bought Gillian’s act.

Merrick wasn’t at the base right now. If he returned and found Tristan had caused trouble for tris soldiers, he would give him a harsh scolding.

“I don’t let people take my things so easily, Ms. Sterling,” Tristan said, his smile cold and forced. “This isn’t over.”

He put away his fox ears, shot Gillian one last icy glance, and/pushed through the crowd.

Gillian didn’t react at all. She just tuned out his barking.

“Thank you all for standing up for us. We’re safe now because of you,” Mabel said cheerfully to the surrounding beastmen once Tristan had left.

The beastmen scratched their necks and smiled warmly. At a single look from George, the crowd quickly dispersed.

“Gillian, it’s getting late. Let me get you settled in,” George said. He walked over to Mabel, bowed slightly, and

r offered her his arm toward the parking area.

George smiled, “Mabel, it was all just a misunderstanding. Don’t worry. Gillian will be safe as long as I’m here.”

Mabel coughed lightly and politely invited George to dinner at the base housing the next day.

“I’m free tomorrow. I’d be happy to come and try your cooking,” George promised.

The most common vehicle in Wasteland City was the metal-grip terrain gripper. A small piece of blackstone could power it for a very long time.

George helped Mabel into his terrain gripper, then turned back to Gillian. “Gillian, that man has powerful backing. He won’t drop this easily. But if you handle the treatment metal properly, he won’t be able to touch you.”

“Thank you, George,” Gillian said. She was grateful neither George nor Freya had mentioned the treatment metal earlier. They were covering for her.

“Lt. Col. Parker, he was trying to steal Gillian’s wrist terminal. It wasn’t her faut at all,” Freya snapped, still angry but helpless against someone so shameless.

“Alright, that’s enough. It’s not a big deal,” George said, ending the conversation.

With George personally escorting them and Freya leading a squad of well-trained female soldiers behind, they headed for the base housing area, where most dependents lived.

But as they drove, the path grew more and more remote. Soon, only George and Freya were still following Gillian’s

coordinates.

They exchanged worried looks. Just which unit did Gillian apply for?

“Gillian, is this the right location?” Freya asked, beginning to doubt the coordinates.

“It’s right. We’re almost there,” Gillian confirmed.

Freya and George’s hearts sank. Did she really rush into applying for one of those small two-story units on the edge?

When the terrain gripper finally reached Gillian’s destination, their worst fears came true.

The location was so isolated it was almost abandoned. On a windy day, laundry would blow right past the housing

barrier.

Gillian, however, was delighted. The house the legion had assigned her was even better than the one she’d had in her past life.

It was a two-story detached home built into the mountainside, with a front and back yard. White Peak stood to its left, and a small stream wrapped around the right.

In the dark, they could only see part of it under the terrain gripper’s lights.

r

White Peak was one of twelve mountains Gillian had bought. In her previous life, she’d scavenged for supplies across all twelve peaks and knew the area like the back of her hand.

Back then, this house had no barrier, and the corruption had worn it down to just a few metal walls. She and her children had stayed there once.
