Chapter 154 Blazewing Solis
“Binary beast?”
The name itself was something Merrick had never come across before.

Gillian laid it all out word for word, the taint, the purge, and every theory she’d pieced together about the whole thing.
Elias and Asher had landed in the binary beast category by sheer accident, because of what she was as their mother.
“Merrick, this cryogold box showing up out of nowhere is suspicious. I’m pretty sure what’s inside is the raw purge in liquid form, and the most I can pull together is one thin wisp of mist.”
If she let things keep heading this way, Gillian had no idea whether Elias and Asher would come out of her body as monsters, killing machines with no off switch.
“Gillian, it’s gonna be okay.”
The one piece Merrick couldn’t get a handle on was Elias and Asher themselves, but they hadn’t even been born yet. Who knew whether anything in those records held true?
“Look, the second they picked up on the danger, they jumped in to save you. No way they’re gonna grow into some bloodthirsty machines. Once they’re born, I’ll raise them right.”
“Merrick, aren’t you scared?”
“Why would I be? They’re our kids.”
Merrick eased Gillian down flat and brought the medical scanner back online to read her vitals along with Elias and Asher’s.
Frustratingly, the scanner still couldn’t pick up a single reading on either Elias or Asher.
Gillian’s own data, on the other hand, came back clean.
Her pale arm was already knitting back together under her healing power. The rotted tissue had turned to fresh, blood-rich flesh, soft and pink.
“Merrick, I’m a cleric. I can do an inner scan with my mind. Both babies are doing great. You don’t have to worry.”
Gillian slowly pushed herself upright and met Merrick’s grave expression head-on.
“Both babies? Gillian, you’re carrying twins?”
Merrick caught her hand, his grip tightening by the second.
Gillian smiled and gave a small nod. “Yeah, twins. What, you not happy about it?”

Was he not happy? He was over the moon.
“Gillian, I might have a way.”

Merrick pulled the White Griffin system chip out of his wrist terminal storage and slotted it into the medical scanner.
“If the White Griffin has data on binary beasts, maybe it can pick up the purge readings too.”
The scanner kicked into a string of beeps, let out one long tone, and got to work.
A few seconds later, Gillian’s health readout populated on the screen.
Merrick scanned through the White Griffin’s report, his eyes darkening. So she really was that so-called binary beast after all.
Even Gillian’s identity had shifted in the readout. Thinking back to the second-layer code on the White Griffin he had already cracked, he could find a way to accept whatever Gillian turned out to be.
Gillian caught the strange look on his face and sat up.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, Gillian. The report says you and the babies are both fine.”
Merrick pulled the White Griffin chip free and forwarded Gillian’s report to her wrist terminal.
Merrick’s tone sounded steady enough to convince Gillian that she, Elias, and Asher were all in the clear, so she didn’t open the report right away. She was more anxious to slip out and find Mabel.
“If everything’s fine, let’s head back out.”
Gillian slid off the medical bed as she spoke and started toward the door.
Merrick stepped in to block her path.
“Your arm hasn’t fully healed and you’re way too pale right now. Walking out like this is gonna scare Grandma.
Was she really looking that rough? Gillian hurried to the mirror for a look. The reflection was worse than Merrick had let on. Sweat had plastered her bangs together in damp clumps, and blood streaked her skin and clothes.
She tugged at Merrick’s hand. “But Grandma’s down there alone with that purge. I’m worried about her.”
“I’ll deal with the cryogold box right now and bring Grandma in to see you. Clean up with a disinfectant wipe and get the blood off.”
Mabel wasn’t young anymore. If she saw Gillian in this state, she’d lie awake the whole night.
“Thanks, Merrick.”

Once Merrick was out of the room, Gillian grabbed a disinfectant wipe, dampened it at the sink, and got to work scrubbing her face clean.
Between strokes, she pulled up the report.
Her stomach dropped.
