Chapter 155 A Cover Story
The next second, Mabel pushed the door open and stepped inside.
“Gillian, are you okay? Where are you hurt?”
“Grandma, I’m right here. I’m fine.”
The sight of Gillian standing tall sent Mabel hurrying across the room.
She grabbed Gillian’s arms with both hands and ran a frantic eye over her, voice cracking with helplessness.
“I saw all that blood on the living room floor. And a chunk of rotted flesh too. What in the world happened?”
The door clicked and swung open a second time.
Merrick stood at the doorway.

He carried the cryogold box in on a metal tray with the utmost care and gave Gillian a small nod.
Gillian curved her lips into a sweet, easy smile.
She caught Mabel’s hands in hers, her voice soft and lightly teasing.
“Grandma, I’m really fine. See? Not a scratch on me anywhere. Merrick and I were just goofing around. The black gunk in that box made me sick to my stomach, that’s all.”
“Really? Then why did Merrick carry you up to the med room?”
Mabel wasn’t that easy to fool. She’d come running because she’d heard Gillian scream in pain.
“Grandma, you don’t believe me?”
Gillian held out her good arm for Mabel to inspect, then showed her both legs, and was about to pull up her shirt to show her belly when Mabel pressed her hands down.
“Merrick’s still here.”
“Grandma, don’t worry. I’m really fine. The flesh and the blood were from inside the box. I just knocked it
over.”
Gillian knew when to quit while she was ahead, and she kept her composure perfectly in check.
“Gillian, you can’t be that careless next time. You dropped that box right on your foot.”
Merrick set the tray down off to the side with care, then turned to Mabel with a soft, soothing voice. “Grandma, don’t worry. I’ve already checked her over. Her foot’s fine.”
Watching Gillian move around without a hitch and seeing no wounds on her body, with Merrick backing

the story up, Mabel finally let her breath ease out.
The relief nearly took her legs out from under her.

Gillian caught her by the elbow. The anesthetic was still doing its job on her not-quite-healed arm, so the touch didn’t sting, and Mabel didn’t catch on to anything.
“As long as you’re okay. As long as you’re okay.”
The swing from terror to relief had drained the color from Mabel’s face.
Gillian’s heart twisted painfully. She looped both arms through Mabel’s and pitched her voice into a coaxing little plea.
“Grandma, let me walk you back to bed. Merrick and I will clean up the living room. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have been so reckless. I scared you, didn’t I?”
Then Mabel pulled up short.
“Are you two lying to me?”
Mabel had only taken a couple of steps before she spotted blood dripping beneath the medical bed. Her expression changed completely, hardened into stone, and she refused to move another inch.
“Gillian, don’t lie to your grandma.”
She knew Gillian was scared she couldn’t take the truth, but Mabel refused to be kept in the dark. She’d weathered every storm life had thrown at her, and all that mattered was that Gillian came out of this safe.
Mabel gripped Gillian’s hand tight between both of hers.
“Grandma’s stronger than you think, Gillian. Don’t lie to me. Tell me where you’re hurt. Does it still hurt bad?”
The more she thought back on Gillian’s state earlier, the more it didn’t sit right.
Gillian didn’t cry out from pain easily, and Merrick had gone white as a sheet when he’d carried her up. Something had gone very wrong with Gillian, and Mabel could feel it.
“Okay, Grandma. I should’ve known I couldn’t hide it from you. Let me come clean.”
Gillian wore the helpless look of someone who’d just been backed into a corner.
She shot Merrick a shy, meaningful glance, and he caught the signal at once, the corner of his mouth ticking up as he crossed over to join them.
“Grandma, the truth is, Gillian’s pregnant. That’s why she got so nauseous a little while ago. We were going to wait a bit longer before telling you, but we didn’t want you reading too much into things.”
“Pregnant?”

Mabel could hardly believe her ears. How many days had it even been since Gillian had bonded with Merrick?
“It’s true, Grandma. I’m carrying twins, that’s why Merrick got so worked up. Elara already knows. Ask her if you don’t believe me.”
“Elara knows too?”
So she was the only one who’d been kept in the dark? How could Gillian and Elara keep something this big from her?
