“Devon, isn’t it? How’s business today? I’ll take three all-access passes, one for me, one for my sister, and one for Grandma.”

The moment all-access passes came up, Devon’s eyes lit up.

Winterhush House was the most extravagant entertainment venue on Gourmaw Road. The single building held more food, drink, and amusement than anyone could count. A single all-access pass granted entry to any of the twenty above-ground floors and ten basement levels, plus the right to pick a companion of one’s choice.

“We hadn’t even officially opened for the day, and then I see Captain Sterling walk through the door. I came rushing right over to greet you. How about you book me to show you around, Captain Sterling?”

Devon’s smile was warm and easy. A single all-access pass earned him a 100,000-coin commission. Three of them meant his whole day was already made.

“Sure, that works. But my sister and Grandma will need two female companions.”

Devon’s face fell a little, but he turned and waved toward the companion station, calling over two of his closest friends.

Both females were beautiful, with elegant figures, and their smiles wrapped around a person like a warm spring breeze.

Gillian’s eyes caught on the hair ornaments they wore. The names etched into them read Linnea and Yvette.

Both names were unfamiliar to her.

Gillian recognized nearly every companion who’d ever worked at Winterhush House, even the ones who’d later scattered or moved on.

But she didn’t recognize Devon or his two friends. Could it be these three had left Winterhush House before her last memories of the place?

Seeing that all three of the pass-holders were female, Linnea and Yvette were visibly relieved.

Both of them dreaded running into the leering brutes who’d throw money around to book a companion and then let their hands wander wherever they pleased.

Just as Gillian and the others reached the front counter to process the passes, a heavily armed group of beastmen stormed in from outside.

Tall, hulking figures came crashing toward the front desk in a rush.

A male security officer at Winterhush House stepped forward to question them and was kicked aside without ceremony.

The leader at the front wore full combat gear, and his coarse, brutal features carried nothing but cold

contempt.

Metal blades and weapons hung from his harness, marking them as space mercenaries who drifted between Capital Planet, the Outer Planets, and the uninhabitable asteroids in between.

Mercenaries like these were either rolling in cash and playing both sides of the law, or fugitives who’d traded names and faces to lay low until they needed another payday.

Either way, both kinds lived by the edge of a blade, and their strength ran well above the ordinary. No reasonable faction wanted to tangle with them.

“Bring Elowen out here! I’m booking her!”

The leader spared a single glance at the trio blocking his path, an older woman with two younger women at her side, and his expression dropped into pure disdain.

“Our boss isn’t in today. We have plenty of skilled companions who can take care of you.”

Devon saw things going south and stepped up to smooth it over, only to take a shot to the leg the very next second.

The leader was wielding a laser gun, and the same shot punched clean through the protective dome around the pear blossom tree.

Glass shards came raining down across the entire hall in a sharp, shattering cascade.

“Who the hell are you to talk to me? Even Elowen herself would be on her knees licking my boots. Get out of my sight!”

As the mercenary’s boot drove toward Devon’s chest, Elara and Gillian moved at the exact same instant.

Two streams of psionic power flared, one white and one gold. The gold stream wrapped tight around Devon’s body.

The other formed a white ice shield that absorbed the brunt of the kick.

In the blink of an eye, Gillian had snatched Devon out of harm’s way.

The mercenary’s foot slammed down into the floor instead, his metalized boot sole sending splinters of ice and broken tile flying in every direction.

The spot where Devon had been lying a second ago was now a ruined crater.

His boot had buried itself deep in the wreckage.

Going by the sheer force behind that kick, the leader had come here to kill.

She and Elara had saved Devon, but they’d dragged the mercenary’s attention squarely onto themselves.

Gillian’s expression turned cold. These were the animals Elowen had once talked about, weren’t they?
