Mabel’s body went limp anyway. Gillian dropped to her knees and held Mabel close. Every Winterhush guide, Linnea and Yvette included, had already collapsed to the floor.

Levi, who had been making a show of leaving, came straight back toward Elara with a sinister grin curling

his mouth.

“You think we just released the gas? No, we set it the moment we walked in. I won’t get my hands on Elowen today, but bagging you instead, Ice Shadow, makes this trip more than worth it.”

Elara felt her own legs starting to go numb. She stopped caring about hiding her strength and pulled together an ice cage that locked Levi in place.

“Gillian, run!”

A heartbeat later, the cage shattered.

An even larger black serpent slithered out of the broken cage and shot straight at Elara.

“Elara!”

Gillian’s golden gauze whipped around Elara, swept her up, and yanked her clear.

Gillian realized that everyone except her had been hit by the gas. Ever since she had become the Blazewing Solis, she seemed to have built an immunity to this kind of haze.

Gillian dropped any pretense of hiding her strength. She pulled a cryogold sphere from her wrist terminal, three drops of pure purge sealed inside.

Merrick had ordered the Sovereign Guard to put it together for her overnight.

The little sphere packed devastating firepower, and Gillian could deploy it with almost zero effort.

“You’re a strange one. You can hurt Blackbone, and my haze doesn’t even touch you. Is the little one with her another freak of nature? Bringing both of you back home with me would make this trip to Wasteland City worth every coin.”

“Yeah? You can try.”

“I’d love to see exactly how you plan to shut me up.”

Levi, now in his enormous black serpent form, lunged straight at Gillian. Elara’s legs had given out and her hands were numb, but she still managed to whip a barrage of ice blades and freezing currents at him.

His armored tail batted the blades aside with surgical precision.

But Elara’s frost rolled in thick enough that even Levi and his men had to back up step by step.

“Ice Shadow lives up to her name.”

Levi hissed the words out through clenched fangs.

One of Ice Shadow’s frost blades had carved a clean cut across his back, and the hot trickle of blood running down his scales fed the rage threatening to break out of him.

If he let Ice Shadow walk away today, he wasn’t Levi.

He needed to hold on a little longer. This haze had been engineered to take down a 9th Legion colond- class beastman, and Ice Shadow walking right into it counted as a bonus he hadn’t planned for.

While the mercenaries were too busy to track her, Gillian moved fast and ferried everyone, Mabel included, out to the front entrance on the ground floor.

“Your little tag-along ditched you, Ice Shadow. She ran.”

“Fuck you.”

Elara had lost all feeling in her fingertips. Levi, that piece of shit, had hit her with the strongest haze on the market.

“Fuck me? Just thinking about you spread out on the floor, motionless, while every fuckwit in the room takes a turn… yeah, that gets me hard.”

The next moment, Elara’s aim went completely off. One of her ice blades nearly impaled a guide huddled in the corner.

Levi made a slow, mocking loop around the floor in his serpent form. Bright red blood trailed from the cut on his back, but something twisted and gleeful crossed his face.

“Well, well, Ice Shadow. Out of juice? Then I guess it’s my turn.”

Levi, you wouldn’t dare!”

Elara had nothing left in the tank, but she wasn’t about to flinch in front of this disgusting snake.

Merrick was nearly there.

“Ice Shadow, weren’t you just saying you don’t know me? But now you’re calling me by name. That makes my pricey haze worth every drop. A milliliter costs millions of coins, by the way. In bed, you can scream my name a hell of a lot louder.”

Levi’s voice dripped with hunger. Up close, Ice Shadow was even more beautiful than he had imagined. His tail coiled tight around Elara and lifted her off the ground.

Levi bit open a pink vial and poured the contents straight into Elara’s mouth.

“That stuff is going to have you begging in a few minutes. Don’t bother asking me to stop.”

Levi tossed the empty vial aside, grinning ear to ear.

Gillian had slipped back without anyone noticing. Her voice carried a sharp edge of mockery as it cut
