Elowen had also noticed the female at Merrick’s side, mostly because Merrick had the kind of protective stance that made it impossible to miss.

It was a strange sight, seeing Merrick with a female at his side. Elowen flashed Gillian a smile, and Gillian returned a soft one of her own.

“Commander, who’s this young friend of yours? A distant relative? She’s such a sweet thing, makes my heart ache to look at her.”

Elowen was burning with curiosity. The look in Gillian’s eyes felt strangely familiar, like Elowen was seeing an old friend.

“You still have time to tease me? Your Winterhush is in shreds. Welcome to Trashhush.”

A cold, debt-collecting look crossed Merrick’s face. His big hand slid around Gillian’s waist.

“She’s my wife. Today my wife, her sister, and their grandmother all came to your place to spend money. and they got hurt. Elowen, how do you propose we settle this score? If it weren’t for them, your Winterhush wouldn’t have made it through today.”

Elowen’s expression changed completely. She immediately turned and apologized to Gillian, then rushed inside. She had been gone for a single morning, and her place was already wrecked.

She wanted to see exactly which bastard had the balls to start trouble on her turf.

Gillian watched Elowen storm in like a fire and couldn’t help laughing. Her wedding wine had survived, but everything else inside the place had been smashed to pieces.

The second Elowen stepped inside Winterhush, she froze in disbelief.

“My white jade floor tiles! My mithril ceiling panels! My bio-garden! Whichever motherfucker did this. I want him dead!”

Elowen clutched her chest, the loss hitting her so hard she could barely stand.

“Boss, it was that thing on the floor.”

The 9th Legion soldiers were chaining up every black serpent beastman still breathing and hauling them

all out.

The black serpent Elara had peeled with her bare hands sat frozen in ice now like a statue. Gore covered the floor, and the iron stink was strong enough to turn anyone’s stomach.

“Holy shit, who was this brutal? Skinned a man down to this?”

Linnea and Yvette knew exactly what had happened. They whispered something into Elowen’s ear, and Elowen immediately spat on the black serpent corpse on the floor.

“Good riddance. He really thought Wasteland City had no one left in it?”

Merrick and Gillian walked in together. “Elowen, you’ll need to come along with us to help with the investigation.”

“Of course. Thank you so much for stepping in today, Mrs. Cole. I owe you that thanks on behalf of all my

staff.”

Elowen reached toward the receptionist and pulled out a cryogold card, then pressed it into Gillian’s hand. “You had quite a scare, Mrs. Cole. Consider this cryogold card my way of thanking you and making it upto you. Anytime you come back, alone or with family, Winterhush is on the house.”

“Elara was the one who saved your Winterhush staff. She’s the one you should really be thanking.”

Gillian looked at the cryogold card and didn’t take it.

Elowen let out a soft exclamation, pulled out a second cryogold card, and pressed both into Gillian’s hand.

“Silly me. Please pass on a big thank-you to Elara.”

“Gillian, let’s go.”

Merrick caught Elowen’s grip on Gillian’s hand and pulled Gillian back, his brow furrowing.

What? She hadn’t even held Elowen’s pretty little hands long enough yet.

Black Rick must be sick in the head. Why guard a soft, sweet wife this tightly?

Gillian pocketed the cryogold cards. Before they left, she pointed at the pear blossom tree still wrapped in golden light.

The golden light around the branches melted away. Specks of gold drifted down with the white petals, beautiful enough to take her breath away.

“Elowen, your wedding wine. It didn’t break.”

“Wedding wine?”

Elowen froze. She rushed over to the pear blossom tree. After 20 years untouched, the trunk had grown thick as a wine barrel, with two side branches the size of a grown adult’s arms.

The canopy was so full it covered nearly an entire corner of Winterhush.

One of the carefully tended branches had a laser-burned hole through it now, and broken leaves and blossoms littered the floor underneath.

Elowen’s nerves tightened. She moved carefully to the foot of the tree, and the faintest hint of wine drifted up from the string of jade gourds hanging from the branches.

She zeroed in on the largest gourd among them. The mouth looked like it had been jolted open, and a slow trickle of cloudy liquid had run down, carrying a soft hint of wine.
