Elara must have been force-fed the heat powder while Gillian was helping Mabel get out.
Gillian grabbed Merrick’s arm like he was her last lifeline.
“Merrick, where did you get your own antidote from before?”
Whatever the source, Gillian wanted to secure one for Elara too. Elara hadn’t been dosed for long, so there was still a window.
“I don’t know. Elara was the one who got it for me last time. She just messaged me that she was going for an antidote. I’ve already sent someone to tail her.”
“Heat powder? How did this happen?”
Mabel’s voice was thick with grief. Both Gillian and Elara had been dealt such a cruel hand, and now this filth had managed to hit both of them.
Merrick set out with Gillian to track down Elara, while a 9th Legion unit escorted Mabel safely home.
“Gillian, you have to save Elara.”
Mabel didn’t want to hold Gillian back another second from finding Elara.
“Grandma, don’t be afraid. Elara is going to be okay.”
Meanwhile, Elara had stormed out of Winterhush, heading straight for the Ice Shadow Squad’s base of operations at Allheal Apothecary on Skyfang Road.
On the surface, the place sold premium nutrient supplements and a range of high-end serums.
In reality, it was a contact point for her master’s network in Wasteland City.
The building stacked five floors above ground and five below, with security tighter than any vault.
The moment Elara left Winterhush, she picked up on Tristan and Sylas trailing behind her.
She walked straight through Skyfang Road, led her tails over to Brutehide Road, then powered down her wrist terminal.
For a level 7 cleric to throw off two level 6 beastmen took barely any effort at all.
By the time Tristan and Sylas realized their target had vanished, panic was already setting in.
Sylas sent, “Commander, Ms. Sterling deliberately shook us off.”
Merrick sent, “Where did you lose her?”
Sylas sent. “Brutehide Road.”

Merrick sent, “Concentrate the search on Brutehide Road, then sweep toward Skyfang and Voidshroud.”
Merrick brought Gillian back to Winterhush. “Don’t panic, Gillian. We’ll use the White Griffin to track her.”
Gillian tugged at Merrick’s arm, her voice tight with worry.
“Merrick, don’t search anymore. Elara doesn’t want me to come after her.”
Gillian had gotten Elara’s message right when Tristan and the others had lost her trail.
“Gillian, go home. Don’t come looking for me. I’ll find you once I’m okay.”
After that, Gillian had sent more messages and gotten nothing back.
Elara had powered off her terminal.
Gillian’s heart sank. Her own healing aura wasn’t strong enough to break heat powder.
How was Elara going to clear the heat powder? Was she going to the person behind all of this?
“Gillian, if you want me to keep searching, the White Griffin can lock onto her location. As long as she’s still in Wasteland City, I can find her.”
“Merrick…”
Gillian had been about to ask Merrick about Ice Shadow and Maddox.
But she thought about how hard Elara had worked to keep this hidden, like she had her reasons, and Gillian held back.
“What is it, Gillian? What were you going to say?”
Merrick saw how pale Gillian’s face had gone. “Gillian, you trust me, right? I will find Elara for you. I promise.”
“Merrick, I trust you. But Elara doesn’t want us coming after her.”
The Ice Shadow business was something she would have to ask Elara about herself.
“I’ll take you home first then. The black serpent beastmen back at Winterhush, I’ll have my people haul them in for interrogation.”
“Merrick, in my dream, those Winterhush attackers were the space pirates who came eight years after the taint outbreak and butchered Wasteland City. I want to interrogate them myself.”
A cold edge cut across Gillian’s expression. She wasn’t about to let these mercenaries walk.
Merrick’s chest tightened. Gillian had never said how her dream had ended. Did that mean Wasteland City had been completely slaughtered by the end of it?
And what about Gillian, had she died too?
