“Oh, those are medical metals brought back by Lt. Col. Parker. With those, Captain Sterling, you won’t have to be afraid here in Wasteland City.”

Gillian’s eyelid twitched.

She wasn’t scared of Wasteland City. But those things? They made her skin crawl.

“We’re here, Captain Sterling.”

After a short walk, the soldier stopped in front of a metal building.

“Thank you.”

Just as Gillian turned to leave, the soldier’s face flushed crimson. He lowered his voice and asked hesitantly, “Captain Sterling… do you have a mate?”

“I do.”

The soldier couldn’t hide his dejection, but he tried to reassure himself. Damn. But Captain Sterling’s so adorable-l can wait for her to get divorced. 2

Gillian watched the soldier’s expression cycle through disappointment and land somewhere around… renewed determination?

Something felt off.

‘Goodbye, Captain Sterling!”

Gillian smiled, “Goodbye.”

Well. The soldiers here are certainly polite.

Gillian stepped inside the first floor and was met with absolute silence.

She walked the length of the long metal corridor and still didn’t see a soul.

Is the medical team off duty today?

“You’re Gillian Sterling?”

A male beastman in a white coat materialized behind her out of nowhere, a metal case clutched in his hand. His glasses caught the light, reflecting it back in a way that masked his expression.

“Yes. And you are?”

“First time meeting. I’m Sylas Moore of the medical team.” His voice was flat, detached. “I’m your subordinate now. If you need anything, you can come to me.”

Gillian extended her hand politely.

Sylas didn’t even glance at it. Just gave the Nightweight metal box in his hand a little toss.

“Sorry. Not convenient.”

Gillian withdrew her hand smoothly, tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “Alright then, lead the way… my new subordinate.”

Behind those glasses, a cold glint flashed through his eyes. His thin lips pressed into a line. “Yes, ma’am.”

His voice was cool, elegant, almost detached. Then he turned and walked away without another word.

Gillian fell into step behind him.

So, this beastman is also a doctor on the medical team?

His attitude made it clear-she wasn’t welcome here.

Well, good thing she hadn’t come to make friends.

Sylas stopped at a specific spot. A green light swept over him.

He adjusted his glasses, and his wrist terminal triggered the door.

The seamless metal door slid slowly open.

“Captain Sterling. Memorize this location. I’ll upload your entry clearance to your terminal later.”

Gillian followed Sylas through the doorway and into the hall beyond.

The massive metal hall held at least a thousand beastman soldiers.

They sat in perfect silence, disciplined and motionless.

White-coated medics moved among them, bending low to murmur things Gillian couldn’t hear.

As she walked through the crowd, soldiers glanced at her with curiosity. But the white-clad medics? Their looks were far less welcoming.

So she wasn’t wanted here.

“Captain Sterling! Over here!”

George’s voice boomed across the hall. He spotted her from a distance and hurried over, practically dragging her toward him.

“Lt. Col. Parker? What are you doing here?”

She hadn’t expected him to come all this way just to meet her.

A genuine smile spread across his face “Came to deliver the medical metals. Figured I’d check in on your first day.”

“Thank you. It’s going well.”

“Good.” He gave her a knowing look. “So what were you doing wandering around out here? All these soldiers have been given treatment metals. Get to work and check on them.”

Gillian frowned in confusion. How does he know I’ve been wandering?

Gillian glanced back at the wall. From the inside, the metal corridor outside was as clear as high-definition glass.

So the thousand soldiers in here had all just watched her wander around like a lost puppy?

Gillian explained, “There weren’t any signs in that hallway. I almost got lost.”

George caught the undertone. There were signs out there. He’d seen them himself.
