But orders were orders, so they sat there obediently. They were curious too to see if Gillian was spouting nonsense, or if the medical equipment itself was malfunctioning.

“Lt. Col. Parker. I can heal these soldiers, but Twant every medic creared out of this hall.”

Gillian’s voice wasn’t loud.

But in the silent metal hall, everyone heard her.

The newly appointed chief medical officer was already throwing her weight around?

After watching her wander cluelessly through the corridor earlier, it was obvious the medical team was giving her the cold shoulder.

“You… don’t need any help?” George’s expression shifted. Is she really trying to establish dominance this early?

“I don’t. I can handle it alone.”

They didn’t want her here? Fine. She didn’t want them here.

For all she knew, there were infiltrators among those medics-spies working from the inside to bring down the 9th Legion.

Right now, Gillian trusted no one.

George hesitated, then nodded. “All medics, clear out! Wait in the corridor. You’ll be called in if needed!”

Hearing George kick them out, the medics almost laughed. Gillian showed up on her first day, stole Sylas’ job as chief medical officer, and now she was kicking them out of their own house?

All eyes turned to Sylas.

He gave Gillian one cold, detached look, set down his metal case, and walked out without a word.

The rest followed like sheep, shooting her poisonous glances as they passed.

Let’s see how many she can actually heal.

Sylas stood outside in the metal corridor, hands in his pockets. His sharp eyes locked onto her like a radar.

Gillian almost wondered if the metal wall was defective. She glanced back at George. “Lt. Col. Parker. Can they see us from out there?”

George’s mouth twitched. Now you’re scared?

“Sylas… it’s a long story. You’d do well to play nice.”

Gillian nodded sweetly. George was telling her to keep her friends close and her enemies closer.

Gillian smiled sweetty, understand, sir.”

Something about that smile made George suspect she understood something entirety different from what he’d

meant.

Outside, the line of white-coated medics had gathered beside him, muttering among themselves. He couldn’t make out the words, but their expressions left no doubt-they were cursing up a storm.

George stole a nervous glance at Gillian. Would she crack under the hostility? These bastards could be vicious. Even he’d felt the sting more than once.

Gillian didn’t seem to care. She turned and walked toward the soldiers.

She paused, noticing George hadn’t moved. “Lt. Col. Parker? What are we waiting for? Let’s begin.”

George knew she had skills. But picking fights with everyone on her first day? The road ahead was going to be

brutal.

Outside, in the corridor, the exiled medics were fuming. “Strutting around like she owns the place just because she’s got Lt. Col. Parker backing her. The nerve!”

“Captain Moore, are we really just going to let her push us around like this?”

“Exactly. Every so-called cleric who comes from the Elemental Cities is all show and no substance. If it weren’t for us keeping this legion alive for the past three years, half these soldiers would be dead already! What does she even know? Purification tricks, that’s all!”

“Those clerics run out of juice after three purifications, tops. She’ll be begging us to come back in no time. Let’s all refuse-show her who really runs things here!”

“Enough.” Sylas’ voice was quiet, but it cut through the noise like a blade.

The medics fell silent, sensing his mood.

“You’re the ones who removed the signs in the corridor, aren’t you?” he said flatly. “Put them back. No need to hand her ammunition on a silver platter.”

“Yes, sir.”

Two medics scurried off to reactivate the corridor’s guidance system.

Sylas leaned against the wall, troubled. He glanced at his wrist terminal. The message he’d received about Gillian was heavily encrypted. Name only. Nothing else.

When he’d first seen her in the corridor, that lost, innocent look-all an act.

How deep do this woman’s skills really go? Are the medical metals actually defective? Or is she here with some other
