Chapter 179 A Real Breakthrough

A snort of laughter escaped Gillian before she could rein it in.

She found the whole thing almost too ridiculous to wrap her head around, because nobody in their right mind would ever turn someone down with a pot of dead seeds.

Hudson opened his mouth to say something more, but Vance cut him off before he could get a word out,

“Clara, where is this seed of yours? Is what Captain Sterling just said actually true?”

Vance was a sly old fox at heart, and a flash of barely contained excitement gleamed in his narrow, fox-ke eyes. If Clara had actually engineered a seed that could resist the taint, the implications would be

enormous.

“It’s in my lab, Dean. You’re welcome to come take a look with me.”

By all conventional wisdom, nobody ever leaked their research data before the experiment was complete, but Clara had a nagging feeling that flying solo on this might end with her seed being destroyed.

The color drained from Wendell’s face as he stepped closer to Clara. “Clara, you really cultivated a seed that can stand up to the taint?”

“It’s only cleared the first stage so far. I’m hitting a wall on the second one. My own abilities can only take me so far, and I’ll need the Legion’s backing to push through.”

Clara turned her gaze to Vance. “Of course, whether it’s real or not, Dean, you’ll know the moment you come and see it for yourself.”

Clara carried herself with so much quiet confidence that the conclusion was unmistakable. She really had pulled it off. The bystanders sucked in sharp breaths all around, sensing that Clara was about to rocket from obscurity into something legendary.

Gillian noticed that even though the Agriculture Academy students ran hot-headed by nature, the moment they realized Clara had achieved an actual breakthrough, their attitude flipped on a dime. Recognition for her skills came instantly, and the look in their eyes shifted into something close to

reverence.

Out here in Wasteland City, real ability remained the only currency that mattered.

Vance let out a long, knowing hum. “Will Captain Sterling be joining us as well?”

Gillian extended a hand, motioning for Vance to go ahead of her. “After you, sir.”

Once Gillian and the others disappeared into the metal lab, a wave of students closed in around the door, waiting for any word straight from Vance’s mouth.

Only moments later, the metal door swung open to reveal Vance’s face creased with the kind of grin that wrinkled every corner of his eyes. “Every generation produces its own talents, and you, Clara my dear, are one of the finest I have seen in a long time.”

The shift in how Vance addressed Clara, slipping into a warm and familiar form of her name, said it all “This was the real deal!

Clara was an absolute force to be reckoned with.

“None of this would have been possible without your guidance, Dean, along with the help of my senior classmates. I’m just standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Clara knew she still had a long road ahead in her own learning, which was exactly why the second phase of the research would need someone more capable than herself working alongside her.

“Now you’re just being modest.”

Vance immediately fired off a message to the boss. “Commander, George Parker’s daughter has cultivated a seed that survives in the taint. This kid is making us all look good.”

“Understood. Have Clara’s entire lab relocated to Legion headquarters and place it under top-tier protection.”

Merrick’s orders came back through almost immediately.

Vance then turned and beckoned to the patrol guards who had stuck around through the whole confrontation. “The commander is dispatching a full company of guards. We’re moving this entire lab out

of here.”

A ripple of stunned chatter swept through the crowd. Clara had really hit the jackpot!

For a brief moment, the tidal wave of envy, jealousy, and resentment pouring out of the onlookers nearly buried Clara where she stood.

Gillian’s attention, however, drifted over to the two young men lurking off to the side.

“So what about these two, the ones who spent all this time harassing and slandering Clara? We had a deal, remember? You’re both losing the right to run experiments here.”

The blood drained clean out of both Walter’s and Hudson’s faces.

Walter let out a panicked shout. “No, you can’t take away my experiment rights! Uncle, we didn’t mean for any of this. Tell the director, Uncle, Clara tricked us too…”

Wendell, on the other hand, understood exactly how much weight Clara now carried, and he suspected the entire student body of the Agriculture Academy combined couldn’t match a single one of her fingers.

Wendell swung around and cracked Walter across the face to shut him up, then launched straight into a furious tirade against his own nephew.

“I told you to focus on your studies. Instead, you spend all day stirring up trouble. From now on, you stay away from idiots and learn a thing or two from Clara, you hear me?”

Walter caught the underlying meaning loud and clear, since his uncle was calling him a fool, and a hot wave of regret crashed over him.
